The thing that stood out about Kirk’s ice cream, is the homestyle throwback to the old ice cream parlors that your grandparents once visited. There are two locations, with the original opening 41 years ago and the second for 26 years itself. Kirk’s has also been featured in several write ups including Southern Living as well as Best on the Beach.
The price was the most reasonable we came across on our trip, considering we don’t hold back on ice cream, and typically get two scoops in a waffle cone and my son orders a milkshake. Our bill for a family of four, came out to around $20 which is always in our vacation budget. The building itself was clean and had a separate sitting room away from the parlor where you order. There was a selection of video games so that kids could play while parents talked. The three girls behind the counter where the definition of Southern charm and sweet as could be. They were so proud of working for Kirks and were VERY generous in their scooping, Which is the quickest way to our hearts!
Unlike many ice cream parlors that stick to one brand so they can get a better price whether the ice cream is good or not, Kirk’s mixes and matches based on the flavor, choosing the best brand offered on that particular flavor. I guess that is still an arbitrary opinion based on taste but the fact they go that extra mile was worth it in the flavors we chose. Kirk’s serves roughly 36 flavors including those that are gluten-free, sorbet’s, and sherbet, each offering a delicious blend of sweet and a generous amount of built-in ingredients. For instance, the pralines and cream had delicious candied pecans and the cookies and cream was practically dark due to the amount of cookie in the cream. The other typical staples exist in the form of waffle cones, dipped waffle cones, and milkshakes. They also have the option of taking pints and quarts home with you when you find that flavor you can’t live without at your timeshare, not that we would know anything about that.
At the end of the day, when my family goes on vacation there are a couple of non-negotiables. One is a great breakfast spot that is not a chain, the second is a place the locals suggest that is a regional staple, and the last is a ice cream place that we will visit nightly. Kirk’s Will forever be that place for us in...
Read moreI have been a regular when I have To Myrtle Beach for the last six years. Each year I would stop at Kirks ice cream parlor to get myself a nice triple scoop of ice cream costing me nine dollars. Not only was ice cream very icy and had very little flavor in it, it is obvious to me that The quality of the ice cream has gone down dramatically from my previous years of getting ice cream at this ice cream parlor. Another point which really upset me is, I ordered a triple scoop, and when I got to my car and started eating it, I realized that the girl only gave me a double scoop and charged me for a triple scoop. I wonder how many times this is happening to other customers at this place. I believe this establishment has had a great reputation for years and lots of people go there year after year. I believe the owner in an effort to make more of a profit doesn’t use the same ingredients or doesn’t have the same supplier. At this point, I would absolutely not recommend this establishment for their ice cream. Very very disappointing and extremely expensive for the overall quality. . I feel I am an ice cream connoisseur, and I am only giving a absolutely honesty evaluation of this...
Read moreAs a relatively new resident of Myrtle Beach, we stopped here only because it happened to be on our way home from dinner. Prior to writing this review, I read some of the reviews previous to mine and just wonder how hard some people must think to nitpick SOMETHING negative to say.
Ok folks...........so here's the deal: The place has a very "old school" feel of the ice cream parlors of yesteryear. We loved it! They must have around 40 to 50 different flavors to choose from. The place was VERY clean throughout. The young lady that served us was finishing up her shift and we had a pretty long line behind us. Even though, she was super helpful, friendly and informative. I got the banana fudge sundae and my wife got a double scoop in a waffle cone. Prices are very reasonable and the VALUE for what we got, was EXTREMELY reasonable. (Whomever said that the prices were expensive are living a NUMBER of years in the past!)
In any event, I score Kirk's a 7 out of 5 stars for ambiance', service, cleanliness, variety and value. This now IS our "go-to" place for ice cream.
Thanks to the Kirk team for a really...
