I left in tears on my honeymoon because one staff member, Melissa, was so rude to me.
I have looked forward to visiting Chandon for the last six months. It's one of my mom and my favorite sparkling brands. For years she has told me what a beautiful winery it is and how I really need to visit. Well, my honeymoon would seem like the perfect time, right? We arrived 12 minutes late for the tour, and were immediately told that we could not go on the tour, as we exceeded the time allowed. And I understand that, but asked for a special allowance with the understanding that we would miss a bit of the tour, due to our lateness, but before I could ask, I was told in the snottiest of tones, by Melissa that no, she was just following the policy and I should go buy a bottle and sit outside. So our driver came up and informed the front desk that the tour hadn't entered the cave yet, and asked if could we run to catch up. After a bit more back and forth, we RAN, and did catch up, and it was a lovely tour with a very nice guide and group. It was wonderful. That is where the two stars are given.
As we went to pay out, Melissa appeared again to give more attitude and snottiness. After a bit more unnecessary back and forth, and some quite rude commentary from Melissa, I asked for the manager. She was quite rude about that and at that point, refused to tell me her name. I found out her name from another employee working in the gift shop. Fortunately my husband is quite a rational man and he calmed me down, as I was very upset at this point. As I was walking out, I said goodbye to Melissa, calling her by name and she yelled out to me, "You were the one who started it, you were the one who got an attitude first." At that point I started crying and ended up leaving the winery crying.
End of the day, the one place that I looked forward to the most made me leave in tears. Happy honeymoon to me. I would not only not recommend this winery to anyone, I would actively discourage them from going. I know it is a busy winery and it doesn't really matter what one person thinks, but I certainly hope they make sure Melissa never makes anyone feel as poorly as she...

Admittedly, you don't necessarily have to be like Veuve Cliquot. Chandon is a winery for the family. Good atmosphere, nice location, fair prices for a good sparkling wine. Great our vacation was enriched by Chandon. It's like a US American coming to Vergelegen Winery or to our King of Bubbly “Villiers” or to Clos Malvernen in South Africa. The Western Cape of South Africa is really in no way inferior to Napa and Sonoma. The only difference is that it's much cheaper...
Read moreBased on the other reviews, we likely experienced an “off” day or a perfect storm of a new team.
I’m local and booked for a large group who flew in from all over. It’s not lost on us that a large group is tough so I was very careful in the planning accordingly and the gal I originally booked with was wonderful and very accommodating; quite a different story upon arrival. Three hosts and yet no one knew what to do with us, we stood aimless for a bit and were then quasi shown to separate tables. Given my reservation was for separate tables to be together, we asked if we could use the empty tables and be near eachother. Instead, they accommodated us with an outdoor space that generally comes at an extra cost. They didn’t charge extra for said space but made it abundantly clear that we were being accommodated and shouldn’t be sitting there. We didn’t ask to sit there, again, they had to put us there because they were unready to accommodate our original reservation.
They then started the tasting late and timed us by the minute. I get it there is a time limit to tastings, no problem, but if the tasting starts late due to your own incompetencies, don’t chase me out to the exact minute.
At the end of the day, I believe the waitstaff misunderstood or miscommunicated internally, but they had our reservation and simply dropped the ball; doing so in a way that made me deeply embarrassed to have brought a group.
Wines are great, no views, and the interior, while nice, is outdated and the gift shop is tacky and...
