Humphrey Street Coffee has rocketed to near the top of my favorite coffee shops. I know they've been roasting for a while, but only when they opened a full-time shop did I make it over. This is the real deal. There are four coffee places within a few blocks of each other, and although they sell fine coffee, I never cared for the vibe or the ethos of the others.
But Humphreys is outstanding in the same way the The Well is. They not only provide a good product, but they use it for a good cause. In the case of the well, they donate some of the funds to bring clean water to impoverished areas in the world, but at Humphreys, they're training young people the art of business and service. All profits go towards this endeavor, and although I'll never criticize a business for making a profit, it's nice to see a company decide to give back.
The environs are great, too. Open, bright, and well lit make it extremely inviting. Clean tables, comfortable seating, and excellent wifi makes it a place you're not going to feel pressured to get in and out.
The coffee is well-worth the experience. Yes, teenagers are actually making your beverage, but they are no worse than any other coffee shop in the area. They are attentive, know their recipes, and appear to be aware of the processes of coffee making. One of the baristas is walking around talking to customers, which make it very personable.
I've been to most of the coffee shops in Nashville, and the lack of pretentiousness, clean and welcome environment, and good coffee makes this a must see if you like good coffee and a nice place to drink coffee, hang out, and support...
Read moreHmm. Mixed review here from a 1st time patron. For one thing, and I’m not pinning this on the business, but the reviews are not listed in chronological order. I wonder why that is. Before coming in I scrolled the top few reviews and they all seemed good. Had I a scrolled further down I would have discovered a more recent review which contains one of my beefs - And that is - the menu posted as part of their listing is definitely out-of-date. I know to expect pictures of the menus to be out-of-date, but I think that the linked menu should have current prices, and it doesn’t. I had “The Natural” toast ($6.00) and a Pour Over ($5.25). The latter was served just mildly warm. I know I could’ve gone up to the counter and complained, but the toast was brought out to me about 3-4 minutes before the coffee and by the time I got the coffee I was super thirsty and decided to just down it. The taste of everything was good. I do think the toast slice could’ve been a little thicker, or give 2 pieces. And the coffee was served in a mug with no handle … is that common for Pour Over’s? Maybe. Idk. I agree that the place is cool (an old church), and there is plentiful, free street parking and a little lot down the hill. And I like the fact that there’s an outdoor seating area which may entice me back here in a warmer month with my dog. Presentation of food and coffee was nice. And staff...
Read moreEdit in response to their response. I know hope long it tales. I don't go to Starbucks. I support my local coffeehouse. I waited more than a reasonable amount of time. I was nice in my review and didn't say what I really felt, and which was proven by your response, This place is pretentious. There were a couple of food items by the register, nothing that looked great. I wasn't in a rush when I stopped in, but, when it takes 20 minutes to get a an iced coffee that's not ok. Lowering my review, which was fair, because of the reply by sometime who obviously knows better than I the experience I had. Don't bother with this place. I usually give second chances. Not this time.
It was ok. My iced coffee was very watery, sadly. Yet another place where the staff seemed uninterested in their customers. The line wasn't terribly long but it moved very slowly and no one seemed to have a large order. Didn't get to try any food as there wasn't much that was...
