Mayte Sweets — Restaurant in New Bern

What I love about this place? Well, thats easy! EVERYTHING!! Mayte herself is just the sweetest and always makes a point to chat with the customers and every once in a while I get lucky and shes tried something new that she will come out and share with whomever is there. I personally just love the Italian Tea Cookies as I am mostly gluten free (I have splurged and had a couple of deserts that weren't GF and they were amazing too). My friend DEVOURED 4 macaroons in short order yesterday and said they were delicious. The food is all made from scratch by Mayte herself and is a treat for the eyes and my belly! All the coffee drinks I have had were delicious as well. The other thing that I like about Mayte's is the nice relaxed atmosphere. Its kind of like taking a step back in time. A small local bakery in New Bern. I tried their iced coffee which was great. Their desserts like the tiramisu, charlotte, and the matcha tiramisu are all very delicious. Prices are a bit expensive but that’s expected from a local place. Service was great as well. The reason I’m giving it 3 stars is because of their cakes. I ordered two of their birthday cakes for me and my dads birthday. They were extremely disappointing. I asked for whipped cream and light sweetness and it was perfect. Both cakes were gorgeous on the outside but not so great on the inside. The first cake was so so dry. Both cakes were 48 dollars so me and my family were surprised. The second time, I asked for a sponge cake so maybe it wouldn’t be so dry. Instead, it was so so wet and mushy. Everything else was so good but for the price, I wouldn’t order cakes from here again. We came here because it was highly rated. It was not the experience I expected based on the reviews. The lady taking our order was not pleasant. After 10 minutes of not getting our second drink, I had to ask about it, but it was still wasn't delivered or announced that it was ready only to later find out it had been sitting on the counter the whole time. The matcha latte was too sweet and had a strong smell. I'm not sure why this cafe has so many 5 star reviews; perhaps locals trying to support this business which I can appreciated, but unfortunately our experience did not live up to expectations. In fairness, we only got drinks and did not try the pastries. Update: The owner realized what happened with our second drink and made another one fresh and brought it to us.
