Our visit to Greca Mediterranean Kitchen + Bar proved to be a most welcome (and unexpected) event. In contrast to the usual "mediterranean fusion" restaurant (complete with predictable menus composed of popular Italian and Greek dishes cooked as fast food) Greca Mediterranean Kitchen + Bar leads with authentic Greek dishes.
Located in Northwest Central Connecticut in a strip mall between the town center of New Milford (worth a walkaround before your meal. Be sure to check out the vintage World War 1 tank prominently placed in the mall) and the town of Kent, Greca Mediterranean Kitchen + Bar offers the "real deal" Greek Cuisine.
This was our first visit to the restaurant. We opted to sample the appetizer list including the Meze Trio (we chose Tzatziki, Hummus Fava, and Melitzanosalata. Pita bread is included) - $17.00. A word on Melizanosalata: The standout is eggplant. During my visit to Targoviste, Romania this last summer I had an opportunity to sample the Romanian equivalent of this dish - Zacusca, and loved it.
We also ordered Beets Scordalia due to the yellow beets at the center or the dish. The beets sit on what this restaurant calls "garlic potato spread" - a bed of a combination of lemon potatoes with small chunks of Feta cheese - $9.00. I asked our friendly waitress about the composition of the Feta cheese. I was surprised to hear Greca's Feta is made with Sheeps Milk - a rarity these days, not only here in the US, but also in Eastern Europe.
If readers are fans of garlic, I would recommend requesting an extra helping. The garlic in our serving of Beets Scordalia was subdued - typical of most of the restaurants I have dined at over the last few years in the US.
Tyrokafteri - $9 - was a standout, although the patties looked machine made, a clear point of difference with their Romanian cousins - Kefte.
We selected Loukaniko - $15 - for its protein, & Ochtapodi (a favorite of ours going back to our visits to restaurants offering Greek cuisine located in Astoria, and Roslyn NY during the period of 2010 - 2021) - $23 -along with full appetizer course versions of Fava - $9, and Zucchini Keftedes - $13.
Dessert included Baklava (made without recourse to syrup - ample crushed walnuts) and, I believe, Galaktoboureko.
Greca Mediterranean Kitchen + Bar should be high on your list if you are looking for mouthwatering food while traveling in Northwest Central...
Read moreWe went in for lunch with expectations that this would be a nice place to stop for some Greek food while in the area. The location is very unassuming at the end of a strip mall. We were greeted and sat down and we began looking at the menu. There were only two other small groups when we got there. The waitress was very friendly and got us drinks right away. We noticed the prices were pretty high compared to other Greek restaurants we’ve been to, but figured if the food was really good it would be worth it. We ordered some calamari as a starter ($16) and I ordered a gyro and a homemade lemonade and my wife got the chicken and fig flatbread.
It took about 15 minutes for the calamari to come out and when we saw it, we were less than impressed. It was a tiny portion that you could tell was overcooked by looking at it and when we tried it, it was verified. I also think the round pieces were previously frozen and they may have freshly cooked the tentacles as they seemed to have a different coating and were all separate on the plate.
Once we finished the calamari, it took another 15-20 minutes to receive our entrees. The waitress was very nice and apologized for the wait. When they got us, they were again, very lackluster. The gyro was ok, but nothing special and my wife’s flatbread was nothing special. The bulgur salad she chose to accompany the flatbread was very bland.
All in all, everything was highly overpriced for the portions and quality of what we received. The food wasn’t bad, it just wasn’t great. If the price point was lower for the food that was received, it would have been more appropriate, but $60 (before tip) for an average meal was disappointing. It won’t be a place we’ll be back to when we’re...
Read moreA group of 7 of us went to Greca last night (8/23) for a friend's birthday dinner. Just under $500.00 & 2 hours and 16 minutes later we walked out a bit tired and disappointed. The waiter was friendly but rarely checked on our table, took quite awhile to get our drinks and order/receive appetizers and then meals. Waiter went missing but we spotted him behind the bar making drinks while the owner was behind the bar yapping to friends/customers.... (I'll assume our waiter was super busy because the "bartender" was behind the bar yapping to friends/customers....) Meanwhile we still had empty glasses and dishes on our table. Other waitstaff passed our table numerous times, you would think it would just be a courtesy to grab empty dishes and glasses as you're walking by, ask if you need anything.... most restaurants it is, here, not so much. When it was brought to the owners attention that the service was below standards he was completely dismissive. At least an apology??? Nope! You'd expect the person running the place would lend a hand when needed to kept the customers happy and wanting to come again....but apparently not here, instead he let the customers leave disappointed which is a guarantee we wont be going back. Such a shame because the food wasn't bad. I'm leaving him a tip here in the pics, hope he reads it, learns from it retrains his staff.... Oh, and just a heads up....if they put a bottle of sparkling water on your table that you didn't ask for, they will charge you eight...
