A Seafood Lover’s Haven at Porgy’s Seafood Market

Porgy’s Seafood Market is a gem for anyone craving the ocean’s freshest bounty. Walking in, the sight of glistening fish on ice set high expectations—and Porgy’s delivered. Nancylee and I started with a dozen raw oysters, plucked straight from local waters. Each one was a briny, silky delight, with a clean, oceanic zing that paired perfectly with a squeeze of lemon. The freshness was undeniable. Next up, the fried flounder stole the show. The golden crusted fillet was crispy outside, flaky and tender within, with a subtle sweetness that screamed fresh catch. It was perfectly seasoned and dipped in a little tartar sauce. The hush puppies were a highlight—crisp, golden orbs with a slightly sweet, corny interior that crumbled just right. They paired beautifully with the tangy, creamy coleslaw, which balanced crunchy cabbage with a zesty dressing that cut through the richness of the fried dishes. The potato salad was magical, having a hint of mustard to round out the flavor. The Gulf shrimp, ordered grilled, were plump and juicy, with a smoky char and a hint of garlic butter that let their natural sweetness shine. At $20 for a generous portion, they felt like a steal. The service was warm, with staff happy to chat about their favorite preparations. For $91 lunch for three people (including beer), Porgy’s offered great value for such fresh seafood. It’s a must-visit for oyster fans and anyone craving a taste of the Gulf. I’ll be back for more flounder and those addictive hush...

Located in Mid-City, Porgy's Seafood Market is a vibrant purple beacon for seafood lovers.

This unique spot combines a retail space with a cozy restaurant vibe, promising an exceptional dining experience.

At the helm is Chef Marcus Jacobs, whose culinary expertise shines through a menu packed with seasonal, wild-caught offerings direct from Louisiana's fisheries.

Expect a treasure hunt for parking, but it's a small price for the reward that awaits: a diverse menu ranging from boiled crawfish and fresh fillets to exquisite crudos, all celebrating the Gulf Coast's rich seafood bounty.

The option to select seafood from the counter case for a custom meal adds a personalized touch, perfectly complemented by a creative drink selection.

Highlights include the boiled crawfish—sweet, perfectly spiced, and invitingly fresh. It's an embodiment of southern cuisine's communal spirit and simplicity.

Another standout is the Pompano po-boy, a testament to the fish's delicate flavor and nutritional value, making it a lunchtime must-try.

Porgy's not only impresses with its thoughtful sourcing and culinary craftsmanship but also captures the essence of New Orleans dining with its great service and local vibe. An unmissable stop for any...

So, we happened upon Porgy's by accident, thinking it was still the previous restaurant that had been there. We were already here, so why not? Walked in thinking we had made a mistake, happy hour and only two other people there. Since we were on a hunt for "happy hour" priced oysters, we forged ahead. Thankfully, my friend Andy knows his oysters, because there were choices to be made. Evan, the fishmonger/owner, brought us a complimentary mahi dip with crackers while waiting, which was delish. The drink menu was okay. They have a seasonal fruit frozen margarita, this one was Satsuma, that I really liked. The oysters were great...definitely fresh. Be careful of the horseradish sauce, must be just grated, it's extra hot. My only complaint is the amount of time it took to shuck two dozen oysters...but I'm sure with practice, Evan will become one mother-shucker. BTW, while there, a guy came in and ordered a po boy which looked amazing and a woman ordered fresh fish from the counter which they cooked for her right there. Damn that looked good when it was served!!! So glad we stumbled upon this "accident" and you...

Kind of a weird combination of a seafood restaurant and a seafood market. It's odd only in the sense that it's an actual dine in restaurant, that looks like they placed their fishmonger on time out. I was thinking several cold cases and a hot bar with a few small tables and chairs. Their is only one cold case of fresh seafood in the front corner. We only came for some fish cause Rouses' seafood looked sus. I was making ceviche, so freshness was a must. While they didn't have anything I was actually looking for, they had several varieties of firm white fish that worked equally well. They only carried about a dozen items, so if you're looking for something particular I would call first. That huge loin of tuna had me thinking sushimi though. Ended up with some gulf shrimp, Hake and grouper cheeks. Everything was super fresh and tasty. I'll have to come back and try the cooked seafood next visit.
