Big Al's Soul Food Kitchen — Restaurant in New York

Nice day for a drive to get Sunday dinner @ BIG AL's!! Glad I did, because it gave me a chance to see where my food is being prepared.. This kitchen spot is located on the corner. Though it's not a sit and dine restaurant, the Southern aroma permeates in the air. Upon walking in the 'Kitchen, Big Al. himself greeted us. After placing our orders, Big Al went to business: preparing our plates: BBQ Ribs, Turkey Wings, Potato salad (which I've had a taste for quite awhile), Collard Greens. DELICIOUS!!!! Ribs were well seasoned with the right amount of BBQ sauce. Love a rib when the meat is falling from the bone, tender & succulent... The potato salad was just right! Tasty and to my liking. Collard greens cooked with smoked turkey.

Healthy portions! Each food dish greeted with a nod and smile. Well worth the price. We'll be back to try the other dishes. Big Al , the owner, was pleasant and welcoming.

Hope he adds desserts to his menu... That would be the topping to a good day's or night's meal. I'd definitely recommend this eatery if you're looking for a fresh home...

Before I start this review... 5 stars?!! Either these ppl are friends or relatives of thee owners or they are just trying to give support to a small black owned business in their area but 5 stars is delusional!!! Now they could have also had parents who can't cook and have destroyed their taste buds or ability to know the difference between good and bad food. Woosaw...

1st off if you drive too fast, you may miss this place. It's a tiny space on a corner. Possibly only 10' wide. But I've been to hole in the walls that have knocked my socks off. This is not that place. To start, service will be slow. The cook does not use gloves which almost made me leave to start. Let me go on record to say, this cooked then microwaved mac and cheese is the worst I've ever tasted. Took a bite of this hard thing and spat it out. Fries horrible. Chicken is seasoned well and may be thee only thing edible there. Collard greens are good. Looks like a place that would take cash only but they do accept cards. 1st visit, last visit. No offense but...

Big Al’s is one of the few authentic soul food spots on the Island. I ordered through Uber Eats, and the pickup process was smooth for the courier. The food was packed well and showed up still very hot.

The ribs were super tender and fell right off the bone. They had this good mix of barbecue and peppery flavor. The wings had a nice little crisp to them too, not super crunchy, but not greasy either. Some hot sauce would have made them perfect, but they were still solid on their own.

The yams were soft and not overly sweet, with a strong but not overpowering taste of cinnamon. The mac and cheese had a slightly dry top layer, but once mixed together, it was rich, creamy, and velvety.

Portions were good and the prices were fair for what you get. Definitely worth checking out if you’re craving soul food in...
