Extremely disappointing experience. My fiance and I ordered a cappuccino and a shot of espresso. When we asked to have in house cups we were told that they were closing soon and they didn't want to let us have in house cups for our drinks. I would be a little more understanding if we hadn't come in one and a half hours before closing. The barista making our drinks was clearly having a bad day and was having a fit when the other customers weren't picking their drinks up fast enough. The espresso I ordered came out lukewarm and completely devoid of crema and complexity. It was bitter and clearly not extracted well. The cappuccino was fine but not amazing.
I've been working in coffee for over a decade in Virginia and have visited many coffee roasters on the east and west coast. I couldn't imagine serving such a mediocre shot to a customer, especially in a paper cup.
Bluebottle is well known in the industry and I'm sure their coffee is fantastic but sadly the people they have working at this shop are allowed to serve it and I won't be purchasing anything else from here so I'll never know. I had been looking forward to this shop after I had found out there was a location so close to where we were in Manhattan. We went out of our way to visit but it was a...
Read moreWhile my wife and I were visiting the 9/11 Memorial we had some time before our tickets were good for entry. So we did what any other person of our generation would do, go find a cup of coffee.
This location was maybe a 5 minute walk from the 9/11 Memorial so I wager it can get pretty busy. On a Sunday at 5:00 PM it was pretty calm so we didn't have a line to wait in.
We asked the staff member working the register what beverage they would suggest and their suggestion was the Iced NOLA so that's what we went with. For background here's how they describe the Iced NOLA on their web-site: 'New Orleans-Style Iced Coffee is slowly cold-brewed with roasted chicory and cut with just the right touch of cane sugar and your choice of milk.'
My NOLA style was with Oatmilk and it was delightful. The chicory can be a bit bitter but it was offset nicely by the sugar and the creaminess of the oatmilk. Overall a really good beverage that is decently sized and priced. I would recommend giving it a try if you find yourself near a Blue Bottle...
Read moreI've been a huge fan of Blue Bottle since the beginning and I was always impressed how they maintained standards as they expanded. But the last several experiences at this cafe left me feeling a pit in my stomach that I'd just thrown away $8 on a bad drink. Today I got the winter Nola, asked for whole milk. What I was given had oat milk and so little coffee concentrate that it tastes like a straight up glass of oat milk... for nearly $8. Previous times I've ordered iced americanos and the shots taste choked (all bitter and no flavor) and the proportions are bad, too much water and not enough ice resulting in a luke warm coffee water.
At this point I feel stupid for continuing to waste my money here, but blue bottle used to be a special treat for me that I looked forward to. After the last few experiences I feel I would've had a tastier drink and spent less money...
