My friends and I went here to grab a quick snack and drinks. I noticed that the man who took our order and was also the cashier (possibly the owner?) allowed my friend who appears white to buy a drink without food. When I (a black person) ordered my drink, he insisted that I should buy food. Note: we were standing in a line and it was not immediately obvious that we were part of the same party. I must have had a confused look on my face because it was so obvious how differently my friend was treated compared to me. In response to my confusion, the owner (?), rudely asked me if I was new to the area and asked if I have ever ordered a drink in NYC. Once I confirmed that the person who took my order and the person who took my friend's order was the same man, my friends and I pointed out that I was treated differently. He responded defensively and deflected. He never directly responded to our observation that I was treated differently than other customers. At one point he even "if you want an apology, fine I'll give you an apology, sorry." I'm disappointed in his response and I hope he and other employees of this establishment treat other black and brown customers better in the future.
I want to be supportive of small restaurants but I also I don't like pay to be treated badly. This experience would have been so different if he acknowledged what happened and apologized. We all make mistakes. But instead he got defensive and acted as if the word "sorry"...
Read moreThere is a short, dark haired, miserable older woman that works behind the counter who should be fired. I've been to Cafe Amrita enough times before writing this review because I wanted to give multiple chances to this establishment. Sadly, I have had my last straw because of the poor customer service of that discourteous woman.
On my very first visit, when I walked in I initially stood at the front waiting to be seated. There was no greeting, she was absolutely ill mannered and left me with an unfriendly experience.
Each time I have gone to this place after that, the impertinent woman has maintained the same demeanor and energy.
During my last visit, I was with my niece who is a toddler. I gave her a small snack to have with her sippy cup of water & the insolent woman approached us and said that outside food and drink was not allowed.
I myself already ordered and was eating a sandwich and drink from Cafe Amrita and I didn't want my niece to just sit there staring at me eat. The no outside food or drink rule for a...
Read moreI’ve been a loyal patron of Amrita Cafe for over eight years, and it never disappoints! The atmosphere is consistently pleasant, with a delightful mix of classical music, jazz, and even some modern pop or hip-hop. The staff, especially the cashiers, are always friendly and attentive, making you feel right at home.
The culinary highlights are truly remarkable. The chef’s skills shine through in my go-to order: the bacon, egg, and cheese on a croissant. It's always delicious! And I can't forget to mention the cappuccino—it's consistently on point and has become a bit of an obsession for me. The fresh cookies are a must-try, with the chocolate chip cookie reigning supreme, closely followed by the oatmeal cookie.
Conveniently located on 110th St. by Central Park, Amrita Cafe is perfect whether you're looking to enjoy breakfast or lunch inside or take your drink outside to soak in the park's beauty. It’s truly the perfect little café for the area! Highly...
