Been meaning to try Chez Oskar for a while and finally got around to it. Overall I loved it, but would use this experience to curate what I order in future since there were three of us and we had 3 courses it was a good opportunity to test what’s worth getting.
Drinks: We tried the noisette martini, walnut negroni, and pear 75. All were pretty good. The nut sprinkles on the noisette were a cute touch but annoying to consume, too chunky and meant you have to chew the drink. Nut shavings or grounds would be better.
Starters: Chicken liver mousse was tasty af. Ratio of mousse to bread to cornichons was off. You need a piece of cornichon in every bite to cut through the richness of the mousse, and easily an extra slice of bread. Escargots and bone marrow was near-faultless. Onion soup was good but the cheese was a bit overpowering. Not a usual French onion but still good.
Entrees: Risotto of the day was rainbow trout with saffron and Dijon. So unusual and delicious. Perfectly cooked. Steak frites was banging. Juicy (get it medium rare I beg you) and flavorful steak, frites were not the crispiest but more fluffy. Could have had more frite and less side salad if anything.
Dessert: key lime pie was good, not great. Got it with the limoncello which was objectively the worst thing that landed on our table and came 5 mins after we finished the desserts. Creme brûlée would be better off with regular vanilla bean. A good crème brûlée doesn’t need orange and saffron. Flourless choc cake was very good, comes with a few strawberry slices and vanilla ice cream. Perfect.
Service was very French (aka a bit slow and very hands off). We got our starters before any water or drinks and had to ask again for them. If you’re looking for American style overbearing service, don’t expect that here. It wasn’t super busy but I did only see two staff the entire time so I wonder if they were short. If that’s the case they did a decent job of managing it.
Knocked off a star for the limoncello, lacklustre crème brûlée and key lime pie, and slightly impaired service. Would definitely go again because the rest...
Read moreIf I could give this place 10 stars on the food alone I would. Holy smokes talk about the most delicious fresh ingredients and flavors. I'm a huge foodie and super critical about meals when I eat out. This is the best meal I have had the entire year of 2020. I'm officially addicted to this place! It's nice to be able to eat outdoors with my pup safely and socially distanced. It's a cute little place and set-up very nice ambiance and servers. It was my first time eating here with my friend and my fur baby. Now let's get to the food we had the grilled squid chili charred as an appetizer. Not only was it a good sized portion that would've been satisfying as a meal for one person. The flavors OMG!! The squid was cooked to perfection with the perfect hint of a chili that left a nice little kick but very subtle so perfect for those who have trouble with anything spicy this won't bother you at all. The zucchini and lemon that wer grilled with it in this incredible sauce with scallions were so tender. For our main entrees I had the most delicious Spicy Salmon burgers cooked and seasoned to perfection with a small salad and steak fries, chipotle mayo. It was so satisfying and tasty my friend had the Shrimp and Calamari Pineapple risotto that looked like heaven a good sized portion for your money and she it tasted amazing the addition of the pineapple gave it a sweet refreshing taste to balance out the heat of the risotto and the Calamari and shrimp were phenomenal cooked to perfection! The drinks we also we're out of this world the socialite was my personal favorite that is a Gin base with refreshing cucumber. Really high quality Gin with a sweetness did not leave me with a dry throat after like most cheaper gins do. What else can I say this place is officially my favorite new place in the neighborhood. They also offer Brunch/Breakfast style dishes all day for those who love to eat breakfast anytime of day. If you're in Bedstuy or visiting the neighborhood it's a must...
Read moreI went here on a date. Not to be confused with dating, I ain't dating anyone. hahaha. (Cultural gap thing need an explanation). Okay enough about me.
Chez Oskar is definitely a bring a date here type of vibe, so swexi.
Let's start with the wonderful bar-staff. Devin and the lady whose father was in the military (I forgot her name) were delightful. Imagine, even after they were closed and I'm sure very tired, they didn't once move to kick us out.
The space on first glance can look congested but isn't at all. There's enough room at tables for long legs and big arms, not my date's. We sat at the bar, isn't that the place to be? There are two sides, one with the bar and a few dinning tables and on the other side same bar and seating set up but larger.
We tried a hibiscus something drink which includes egg whites, the date loved it. That along with house wines and of course water de water satisfied our thirsty selves.
The salad, olives and octopus and bread were very filling starters and went down divine. We decided against entrees as we were filled. My only complaint was the octy could have been a tad softer, it was a bit too chewy. No, I've had softer so yes it can be done that way. When we decided to try something else the kitchen was closed but we were informed when they were gonna so our fault we waited that long.
The decor is very artsy which your girl adored and of course my damn camera phone had to be messy that evening not allowing me to take fitting pics. Damn you Android!
I will be back, especially as I now live next...
