Let me start off by saying I've never felt that service was so bad that I had to write a negative review. This will be my first.

My partner and I attempted to dine at Double Zero in NYC on Tuesday, November 26th. We arrived to find 2 other customers in the location, each at their own table. We sat down and ordered around 5:05. Over the next few minutes, several other customers came into the restaurant, including a 4-top that appeared to be a friends group, and a woman with 2-3 children along with her husband, and another couple. By 5:40P, the 4-top of friends had already had two pizzas delivered and had almost finished their food. The others in the restaurants had already received some portion of their meals as well. My partner and I had not received our order. When I inquired as to how long it would take to finish our order of a single pizza, I was told that they were just about to start making it. When I asked how the tables that arrived, and ordered, after us got their orders (including at least two pizzas), I was told that it wasn’t a problem. When I inquired if pizza’s were cooked in the order of them being placed, I was told that sometimes the system prints the orders late, and was again being told that this wasn’t a problem. (I’m not sure why they didn’t recognize this as a problem and at minimum offer an apology, rather they blamed me) When I informed the staff that I had to leave because I didn’t have time to wait if they were just barely starting my order, after already waiting for 35 minutes at this point, I again was told this wasn’t an issue, and that I was making a problem where that wasn’t one. I’m not sure how the staff could be so dismissive of my concerns, and even turn the script and try to put the blame on me for “making a problem where there isn’t one” when clearly they hadn’t even started on my food after 35 minutes. Had delivered food to other tables (including pizzas) ahead of ours and didn’t seem to be a bit concerned about this. No apologies, no concern, just telling me that it was my fault somehow for being concerned, and making a problem where none existed, about how long it had been and they were just barely...

This restaurant definitely earns its name because double zero is my rating. It is difficult to express just how disappointing this was on so many levels. There is little that could have gone wrong that did not, beginning with the fact that despite having had a reservation, we (along with several other parties) stood around for 15 minutes before any member of the staff even greeted us. After being seated, we quickly realized that the restaurant was seriously understaffed. The staff, who all seemed stressed out and miserable, barely made eye contact with us and bumbled their way through basic tasks such as pouring a beer into a glass. Then comes the food. We ordered a squash blossom pizza---which apparently means squash blossom, singular, as we were only able to detect a single squash blossom. The mozzarella that was supposed to be on the pizza was similarly skimpy. The addition of arugula to the pizza literally meant they just piled arugula on top of the finished pizza (and for which we were overcharged on the bill). Our second pizza, which had ‘shiitake bacon’, turned out to have the identical mushrooms that we had previously eaten under the different name of ‘fungi agrodolce’ as an appetizer. Overall our overwhelming impression was a cheapskate restaurant, cutting corners at every possible opportunity. After all the positive reviews we had read, it was extremely disappointing. We’ll never go back, nor will we try another one of Matthew’s restaurants. If you want real vegan pizza, go to Scarr’s, and if you want a great vegan dining experience go...

The food was excellent! Loved all the options for allergens. Unfortunately this was the worst service I have ever had in New York City. We are a group of people also in the industry and were simply appalled. Since we have souls and hearts we were nothing but kind and (even though it was included) tipped 20% and would have regardless because we like to give anyone the benefit of the doubt but wow. First off we had no greeting just a "are you guys ready to order" next a wine was forgotten and when we reminded we got an "oh okay" not even a slight apology. We were waiting to hear back about a specific cheese for a pine nut allergy and the food arrived without ever giving us an answer. We had to ask to clarify which type of cheese was ordered. We never got asked if everything was okay, no quality check. We wanted to order a full nother round of wine and never got asked. I spoke to a man after and let him know our server was very bad to which I was met with more passive attitude and I just wanted to to let him know we are heavily in the industry and tipped 20% anyway but it was horrible. We won't be returning which is unfortunate because you never know when there is an opportunity to grow and network with other people in the Italian restaurant industry. Sad for you guys, happy we ate some good pizza. Maybe it was a bad day, or maybe it was just a...

TL;DR: Not worth the price. For $21 each we got the SPICY MARINARA ARRABBIATA and another pizza with their signature cashew cheese, artichoke, light tomato sauce, and balsamic drizzle. All their pizzas are personal sized and served on baking sheets with a pile of red pepper flakes in the corner. The crust on both was chewy and delicious (could have used some more char for my preference, but still good). The artichoke pizza was tasty and well balanced. But the Arrabiata one, which was recommended to us, was seriously disappointing. The cauliflower was very bland and seemed to be steamed. The macadamia ricotta was sparse and had less flavor than store-bought almond ricotta which I use. The "shitake bacon" was just soft pieces of sauteéd shitake... there was nothing bacon about it. The ambiance was nice though the place is cramped and the waiter was very helpful, bringing out tomato sauce to help us manage the arrabiata pizza. The lemon basil drink was also very tasty. Overall though, for the price, it was not worth it. In NYC especially, there's delicious and cheap pizza everywhere. The crust was special, but I would not pay $21 + tax and tip for a personal that pizza I don't enjoy again. I would rather make my own at home, especially with the ubiquity of frozen pizza crusts and vegan pies nowadays.

Had always wanted to go to the Double Zero in Venice, CA, so I was excited to finally try the location in NYC! First off, I found the location to be a bit confusing. There’s two restaurants operating in the same space, so I nearly walked out thinking I was in the wrong place. Now onto the food and experience! I tried the mushroom pizza and cacio e pepe (see pic of pasta in my review). The pasta was really good. Creamy, lots of flavor, and great texture. It’s not the same as cacio e pepe in Rome, but nonetheless enjoyable. The pizza tasted good but violated the #1 holy rule of pizza making: limp crust. I couldn’t pick up the slice without it sagging. Whomp, whomp. You also have to be a big fan of truffle oil, it’s used pretty liberally on this dish. The service was great, though. Nice servers, very eager to refill a glass or clear the table, and the food came out fairly quick. Done and dusted. Love it. Note to kitchen: try to add some umami or fermented notes in the cacio e pepe to mimic cheese. A lot of places have a killer vegan cream sauce, but none have captured the special-ness (yes, I know that’s not a real word!) of cacio e pepe. There’s a lot of decent vegan cheeses out…it may yield a better result! If you crack the code I’ll gladly come back to try it!! 😊
