I moved to New York about a month and a half ago and was nervous trying to find a new stylist. After copious amounts of googling and searching on subreddits for suggestions, I was getting overwhelmed until Mey kept popping up as a recommendation over and over. So I took a chance and booked a haircut with Suguru - I’m literally walking out now and can’t stop smiling, I am so so happy I found this place and Suguru!

After I showed him a few pictures of what I want and just a few minutes of knowing me and my hair, he not only understood what I wanted, he was able to identify things I always struggled with in styling my hair and tell me why and how to work with it! All my life almost every time I’ve asked “what do you recommend?” for a haircut I’ve gotten “whatever you want, it’s your hair,” which always had me panicked because I dont know?!

What I desperately wanted was an expert who could see what hairstyles I liked and adapt it for my face shape and my hair texture and type - and that is SUGURU!

Things I’ve always hated about my hair he taught me how to manage, he found a style that accommodates my super low maintenance lifestyle (read: I am lazy and am always running late), and it’s the cutest fanciest cut ever.

Not only that, he’s an absolute joy of a human being and he’s ethical - not once did I feel like he was trying to push product or upsell me.

Haircut: I have long hair and requested a straightforward cut with light styling, providing a reference photo and details about my hair routine. I also expressed openness to the stylist’s suggestions.

While Sugure (the owner) managed to style my hair to resemble the photo, the actual haircut didn’t align with the reference. Achieving the desired look relied heavily on professional styling rather than the haircut itself. A great stylist doesn’t just replicate a reference image but considers what suits the individual—their face shape, personal style, and hair type—while balancing it with their preferences. That’s what makes a $200+ haircut worth it.

I was explicit that I don’t do much daily styling and needed a cut that would look good with minimal effort. While I wasn’t expecting a “wake-up-and-go” red carpet look, I now struggle daily to make my hair look and feel good about myself—the side bangs look choppy and out of place. I’ve never had this issue in the past.

Perhaps this salon specializes in more edgy, unisex styles like wolf cuts, whereas I sought something traditionally feminine and soft—so there may have been a mismatch in approach. That said, I don’t think that fully justifies the experience, and I wouldn’t pay more than $80 for the quality of the cut I received.

I had a haircut that wasn't the most flattering and I was itching to get it cut after waiting 3 months. Usually I travel out of state, so I wasn't hesitate on searching outside and also spending a little more money than I usually do since I only cut my hair twice a year. I booked an appointment with Kiyo, and I spoke to him over Instagram and sent pictures of my hair, how it looked, and what could work for my hair. After biting the bullet, I headed over on a rainy day (which happened to be my birthday) and honestly I could not be more pleased with the experience. He sat down with me in a 20 min consultation about realistic expectations with my hair, what could be done and how short I could go without it looking unflattering, and he accommodated my lack of vision without glasses by letting me look at the progress between cuts. He also explained realistically what ways I could recreate my hair outside of the salon, and recreated a very flattering look. Not only do I not have to do much maintenance, but I no longer have a fear of going to the hair salon. I will be coming back again, and no longer will have the fear of experimenting with new haircuts :) Just as a heads up, they do tips on Venmo or cash only! Kiyo has a great personality and talked with me throughout the process as well. I cannot wait for my next haircut :D
