Title: A Sushi Haven with a Twist - Mama Sushi Delivers! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Yesterday evening, I enjoyed dining at Mama Sushi at 74 Dyckman Street in upper Manhattan. This delightful eatery boasts three unique dining spaces to cater to your ambiance preference – a cozy indoor area, a curbside space, and an innovative designated fenced area across the street. Since the weather was on my side, I settled comfortably in the latter, an arrangement showcasing Mama Sushi's creativity in urban space. As the DJ effortlessly spun a selection of Latin tunes, my senses were entertained and enticed by their kitchen's exotic aroma. The well-chosen music and excellent audio quality added an extra layer of enjoyment to my dining experience, merging seamlessly with the restaurant's lively vibe. Having had my fill of raw sushi in the past, I sought a different culinary adventure. The courteous and accommodating host pointed me towards their house sushi roll called 237 Dyckman - a delectable blend of Shrimp Tempura, Sweet Plantain, Avocado, and Cream Cheese, all coated in a sublime Eel Sauce and deep-fried to perfection. The sushi roll came with the usual sushi accompaniments and was generously portioned, adding value to the dining experience. Although the wait was slightly longer than usual, it was understandable, given the bustling weekend crowd and the delightful weather. While the preparation and presentation were impressive, I still preferred the raw sushi variety. The staff at Mama Sushi deserves a special mention. Despite the language barrier, some team members were not fluent in English, so they provided impeccable service. This place reflects the surrounding neighborhood, with Spanish as a common language. One glance at their extensive menu shows that this restaurant is not just about sushi. Their vast offerings ensure I'll be back to embark on a new gastronomic journey. And the cherry on top? The roll dish and my soda cost were reasonable, promising quality food without breaking the bank. Overall, my experience at Mama Sushi was overwhelmingly positive. It's an enchanting blend of delicious, inventive food, refreshing music, a unique ambiance, and welcoming staff. A gem in Manhattan that I'd highly recommend to locals and tourists alike. Looking forward to my next visit, Mama Sushi! 🍣

MamaSushi, located in the heart of the vibrant Dyckman neighborhood of NYC, is a true culinary gem that brilliantly infuses Asian and Dominican cuisine in ways that are nothing short of genius. Walking into MamaSushi, you're immediately struck by the restaurant's colorful decor, lively atmosphere, and friendly staff. But what really sets this place apart is the food. The menu is a creative fusion of flavors, combining traditional Asian dishes with the bold spices and textures of Dominican cuisine. From the sushi rolls to the empanadas, each dish is carefully crafted to balance sweet, savory, and spicy flavors in perfect harmony. The standout dish at MamaSushi, however, is undoubtedly the mofongo sushi roll. This innovative creation combines the classic Dominican dish of mashed plantains with fresh sushi ingredients, creating a flavor explosion that will leave you wanting more. But it's not just the food that makes MamaSushi special. The restaurant's commitment to sustainability and community is evident in everything they do. They source their ingredients locally whenever possible, and they give back to the community through charitable initiatives and events. Overall, MamaSushi is a must-visit spot for anyone looking for a truly unique culinary experience. Whether you're a fan of Asian or Dominican cuisine, or simply a lover of great food, this restaurant has something for everyone.

AMBIANCE: My friend and I came here on a Sunday afternoon to head a bite to eat. We weren’t trying to do brunch or anything but we should’ve known better because this place was brunch vibes all around. It was pretty loud and obnoxious in there. Again, we weren’t doing an all out brunch but I guess if we were we would’ve been ok with the day-party. DRINK: We both ordered one mojito because honestly, $14 for a mojito is ridiculous. Although we thought it was overpriced, once they came and we tasted them we knew why. The drinks were pretty strong and large so I guess we got our money’s worth. It was delicious. FOOD: We ordered a side of yuca fries which was DELICIOUS! They were so addicting and they brought so many! Omg they were so good. I ordered the Campesino roll. I’ve been waiting to try this for years because I’m from FL so we don’t have anything like this back home. I also don’t eat regular sushi so Dominican sushi is right up my alley. I will say that I wish this was a little warm, I know sushi is served cold but since everything is cooked in this roll I would’ve have liked it to be warm. I also could taste a faint fishy taste in my rice. It wasn’t horrible to the point where I couldn’t eat it, but I would appreciate it if my rice didn’t smell like fish when I’m trying to eat my salami y queso. SERVICE: We had a large party next to us with which we shared our waitress with. Our waitress was very lively with them and would sing the songs with them when they started singing and whatnot. I thought that was fun because she kept that pumped up energy that they were giving off. I did notice at one point she brought the table some drinks and they were not very satisfied with them so they wanted to send them back to the bar. The waitress asked what was wrong and then I saw her point to the glass as if she’s asking to taste it to verify. She sipped some of the drink and proceeded to take them back to the bar. I found this to be unprofessional as you should not openly take a sip of an alcoholic drink from a guest. Also, she is not a bartender, only the bartender should taste their drink to verify if it is correct or not. And even then, they usually take a small sample using the suction of a straw, not drinking from the glass itself. I just didn’t like that. Overall this place is cool if you’re trying to go out and have a little party with your friends, definitely not a place to just grab a quick bite because it’s always a party in there. I would go again but with a larger group of ppl and maybe at night.

Where do I even start? I always try my best to support places in the neighborhood I grew up in but it always ends up being a disappointment. To begin with, I am only giving this place 2 stars because the food and the drinks were good. When we first arrived, the lady in charge of hookahs approached us way before our waiter did. Once our waiter did finally approach us, it was well after 10 minutes. Asked for our food and drink orders and that was that. Was not welcoming whatsoever. We immediately asked for water because it was during the summer and it was extremely hot. We waited another 10-15 minutes for water, which I ended up having to flag our waiter down and ask again (we got our cocktails before we got water.) We ordered the calamari which was delicious and the waiter was nice enough to change the original sauce they came with for the sweet chilli sauce. We ordered the merengue and el fuerte sushi rolls but ended up getting the merengue and el montro. We tried to get it fixed but once again the waiter was nowhere to be found so we dealt with it in order to avoid waiting so long again. Once we finished, trying to get to our check was another waiting game. While I was trying to get my waiters attention he was at the other end of the restaurant having a conversation while I was trying to get him to notice us. I work in the hospitality industry and I try to be very understanding but it’s so such a shame that the places I choose to support don’t always meet expectations. I am a strong believer that employees are a reflection of management and this place needs an improvement to say the least. The staff needs better training in order to properly accommodate the customers needs.

This is an interesting restaurant, strikes me as Hispanic meets Asian, which I've never seen before. Upon entering around the late afternoon, the establishment was very empty, which is never a good sign to me if I'm eating at a place for the first time. The establishment was decorated well and and the ambience was calm and soothing. The waitress sat us down fairly quickly and pressured us into ordering drinks and apps before we even had a chance to look at the menu, and I found that to be extremely annoying. After much debating at our table, we finally put our order in and the drinks were served swiftly. Despite there being only like 1 other party, our calamari took long to be served but when it did come, boy was it delicious! The calamari was coated well and cooked to the point where it wasn't rubbery. We ordered a sushi platter with 5 different rolls for five of us and it came out about 15 mins after the calamari, even though the place was still empty. It was just enough to fill us up for the most part and the rolls looked very aesthetically pleasing the way they were served with 3 different sauces in a separate dish. Overall my experience was good but next time, I wouldn't get sushi as an entree because I feel like the prices are inflated but the food was tasty.
