We were craving some burgers, and since this place had just that, we decided to give them a try for weekend brunch. It was not too crowded, and we were seated pretty quickly. It was a nice space, large and open. The openness can be both good and bad. It can allow natural lights from outside to reach every corner of the restaurant, but at the same time, sounds and noise can do the same. The noise level was very high, it was extremely loud in there. The music was blasting out, and people trying to talk over the music, not a good combination.
I ordered the Fort Tryon Red Eye Burger, which comes with one complimentary drink of your choice. When I put in the order, I heard the waitress say âhow would you like egg cooked?â I was surprised since I thought it was predetermined, but I still answered and said âsunny side up.â She raised her eyebrows, almost rolling her eyes, and said âno, the burgerâ in a smug way. I guess she said âhow would you like IT [the burger] cookedâ but the music was so loud I couldnât really here her every ward. And then the attitude? Well, it didnât end there. The Brunch menu comes with one complimentary drink of your choice, but she didnât say a word about it, so we had to ask for it. I asked for a hot tea, thinking that she will then proceed to tell me what kinds of tea selections they have, but she just said âokâ and walked away. I was starting to regret entering this place.
When she returned with our drinks, she brought a coffee for my husband, and a hot water with lemon for me. She realized she forgot the actual tea bag, so she laughed it off and came back with Lipton Black Tea. I am not sure if this is the only tea they have, since she never graced me with the information.
They got one of the orders wrong, so I had to send it back. The waitress never really came to check on us, even with just one of us having a food while waiting for the correct order to be brought out. She never came back to refill our water, coffee, or tea.
The food was really good, but horrible service ruined the experience. Read my full review of the restaurant and food on my food blog,...
Read moreThis is my local pub. Whilst there are other 'old world' public house style options in my neighborhood, I wouldn't want to eat there, not would I expect to get anything other than budweiser or stoli when it comes to 'quality' drinks.
The Tryon is almost always busy after 5pm and at weekends mainly (I believe) because they have identified a solid niche and work hard to live up to the expectations of their regulars.
Come here for solid "pub style food", and decent draughts and spirits. We're not talking exotic microbrews or a three page whisky list, but you can get a draught from someone like Six Point, Allagash or Bronx breweries, and bottles like Duvel or Narragansett, as well as a decent whisky or cocktail.
The food menu doesn't change, but it's a very solid option when you want a properly good (juicy) burger (the Red Eye) with a fried egg in it, or a chicken sandwich or wings etc. It's not the kind of place I would try and have an intimate date on a Friday night - it's WAAAAY too loud for that, but that means it's a great place to go with friends to watch sporting events or soak up the atmosphere.
There's a culturally diverse crowd of patrons, and whilst I was tempted to give a solid four star rating, they get the fifth due to their efforts to be baby and toddler friendly. The staff are great, and even when it gets really busy, the waits aren't too bad, so I don't see a serious downside, unless you start to come here regularly and exhaust the menu (we REALLY need more good food options...
Read moreWill never return. Worst service in this area. Hostess was extremely slow not attentive with no sense of urgency. She cleaned the table but just stood there staring into space then she did not give us menus when she seated us and the menus were right at her station. We sat without menus for awhile and when I got to ask for menus from a server, her response was that the hostess is busy which clearly was not the case I then asked to speak to a manager who never ever came to the table. Not even an apology for being seated without menus . Coffee arrived cold , my egg was cold on the avocado toast and never came with the chili flakes that was clearly on the menu description for the avocado toast, I had to ask the server if I could please have the chilli flakes which he brought out , my boyfriend's potatoes were hard and cold. Huge disappointment all around. Worst part was the hostess!!!!!! who needs some immediate training in front of house, etiquette and hospitality. What a shame . The manager must not care about the customers needs , credit to our server who was the only one who did...
