Apologies in advance for what will likely be a rather lengthy post. I don't normally post reviews, but after what happened this morning, I have to say something.
NYSC Glendale opened an hour late this morning; their opening time is 5:30, we were waiting outside until just shy of 6:30. Not only gym goers, but contractors reporting for work (doing renovations) were left to stand outside indefinitely. This is not the first (or second....or third....) time this has happened. On the weekends it happens nearly every time, which is additionally frustrating because on Sat-Sun they open later at 7. The unreliable opening times have gotten out of control, and that is completely unacceptable for any establishment, let alone a gym that costs $50 a month.
Gyms, much like coffee shops and bodegas, open very early in the morning for a reason: people go before work. If you open the gym a full hour late, you will certainly force people to turn around and head home without getting their workout because they have jobs and other obligations. That wastes their time, gets their day off to a horrible start, and is just disrespectful.
I spoke to the manager after I completed my workout (another thing I hardly ever do), and though she was very friendly, I'm going to have to keep an eye on this going forward. Fellow regulars told me that this particular manager is never on time, so I guess we'll see. Anyway, she said that what had happened was that somebody hadn't shown up to work and that another manager's leave was extended, and that she would be opening the gym for the next month. It seems a bit ridiculous that one person not reporting for work is all it takes for the gym not to open, surely a large chain like NYSC can afford to put 2 people on the opening shift. Furthermore, openers in any establishment are supposed to arrive BEFORE the place opens to get it ready.
The manager gave me my next month's membership free, which was very nice, but I made a point to say that what we want is reliability. It truly is the absolute bare minimum. I suspect they waived A LOT of membership fees today.
Moral of the story: I don't especially want to switch gyms, but if this continues, I...
Read moreI'm so happy to have recently joined this gym! I'd been going to another gym in the area for over two years and I had massive issues with one of their employees who verbally assaulted me, and the owners did bare minimum. We are talking about actions that were discriminatory toward me as a woman with a disability and as a Woman of Color.
At any rate, when I stepped off the elevator at the New York Sports Club, I was greeted warmly by Allan. He gave me a tour on the spot, answered my questions and I was also helped by Simon. Both people were very in tune to my concerns as a woman with a disability and I could tell they actually were touched by my story. I felt seen.
Despite what other people have said about this gyms equipment etc., "newer" "shinier" gyms don't mean much, especially since that equipment will one day get old. Everything gets older, including people. I find the the equipment at this gym is sufficient, there are a lot of different things and multiple more quiet spaces to do a more personal workout routine. What I've truly loved so far are the people that go here.
The front desk staff I've encountered have been kind. The other members are nice. At the other gym, the music was always blasting and many of the people were loud, cursing with very dominant personalities. At the New York Sports Club, people hold the door open for you and flash you a warm smile when you pass the treadmill they are walking on. It reminds me of the true essence of what a neighborhood gym should be. This gym is diverse, with all kinds of people coming to it.
The gym isn't dirty. But, also--it's a gym with lots of foot traffic. It will become unclean at some point, but then it's cleaned by the housekeeping. Don't let "newer" "fancier" gyms fool you. Those get unclean too. The external isn't what matters, much like the real benefit to working out. It's what is inside...
Read moreWell what can I say. Nothing in life lasts forever. The Atlas Mall Gym at Cooper Ave. Glendale NY used to be the best NYSC gym in the city. People always spoke highly about this gym. I have been going to this location for years now and never thought I would see the day that I would consider leaving this location. But after the boys in the NYSC corporate office decided to install a TRX layout, known as the mini golf course among members, members are very unhappy and are looking to make a move to a better organization. Why? The answers are quite simple. That TRX setup was just dumped in the middle of the gym. All the existing equipment was shoved up against each other leaving very little room to maneuver. Not much thought was given to the functionality of the equipment as it relates to getting a proper workout. No rhyme or reason as to the way it was laid out. This is a classic example of a club not caring much about its members. The way the gym is setup is an absolute disgrace. Another sad fact is the membership tiers and how unfair it is to the members that must pay full price ($70 plus) while special interest groups pay less than half. If this is their idea to increase their membership its going to be a rude awakening to the NYSC when it doesn't change. They should seriously think about reducing their rates to attract more members and stop throwing money away. Oh did I mention the lack of a/c and the repeated complaints from the membership. Well other than these issues mentioned the fitness trainers do a decent job and the rest of the staff although they are trying their best to make a poor situation better do manage to smile and keep a positive attitude. But I definitely cannot recommend this gym to anyone in its current condition. Just go take a look for yourself and you'll understand our...
