I went in to this bakery for the first time today to buy a cake for my niece. The place was clean, interesting decor (bread as the object of the paintings), a variety of bakery options (some of it seemed Italian influenced—as I am not Italian I won’t comment on those).
I was on line for 10-15 minutes with no assistance or even inquiry from a single employee (there were at least 4) if I got any help. The gentlemen in front of me received assistance with no disruption or issue.
It was when I was next in line to be helped that the employees seem to move away from behind the counter such that no one was there.
I got as far as the cashier with still no help or the cake I came for. I knew in 2 minutes what I wanted and expected to be in and out. I look behind me and there is a man who instantly received help and the men behind him were getting help. All the while I’m standing there with no assistance and noticed just how quickly the employees came from the corner in which they were fraternizing (I gave them the benefit of the doubt because I work in hospitality) to help other customers.
I asked an employee who wouldn’t even look me in the eyes or in my direction prior to this if there is a method or way they serve their customers that perhaps I am not familiar with and if that is why I must not have been helped or helped first. Nope. It wasn’t rocket science how it worked and in fact, the employee and employees were flippant, distracted, and strange.
I don’t usually make things about my appearance or background as I believe if you’re good people will be good back. But Staten Island has an infamous reputation for how they treat minorities and this bakery lived up to that reputation. I am a Muslim woman who wears the hijab. I wonder how much of THAT affected my experience in this place.
Really disheartening that this was the experience that I had and that the employee who seemed young enough to be a teenager thinks this is not only the correct way to move through the world but an appropriate one.
The cake was tres leche and it didn’t taste like a real or traditional tres leche cake. It was mid and certainly not worth the price tag nor the...
Read moreMy friends and I have been meeting every Sunday morning at Royal Crown for almost 10 years. We enjoy the atmosphere and location. The food is top-notch WHEN it's prepared properly AND served in a timely manner. Fast forward to this morning.
We ordered our usual...Omelets, with mushroom and spinach, on assorted bagels and croissants. Instead all the omelets were delivered on platers AND barely warm. We then had to wait for the bagels to be toasted while our omelets got even colder. We were then told they were out of croissants which is par for the course on Sundays. Suggestion; make more croissants. Here's the kicker...I instead ordered a toasted multi-grain bagel. When it finally arrived it too was barely warm. By this time my omelet was cold. I wrapped up the bagel and gave it to the birds and tossed what was left of my omelet. We did not see our waiter until 30 minutes had passed. Seriously, 30 minutes. It would have been nice if he could have stopped by to see if we wanted a 2nd cup of coffee or anything else. Is this too much to ask for ? But he did not. Still my friends and I left him a 20% tip when in reality he did not deserve one.
Warning...when dining in at this establishment, be prepared. Because every week we have the similar issues...time and time again. Just once, we would like to have our food prepared and delivered the way it was ordered and hot. On top of this, have the waiter stop by while we are eating to see if we need anything else. I personally would have loved a 2nd cup of coffee and some desert. Neither was offered and too much time had passed. Frustrated to say...
Read moreIf you struggle to stay away from bread and love bread, various types, textures and flavors then stay away from here because you'll would surely find some to enjoy. So rich and flavorful. I'm partial to the brick oven bread and when you get to experience the the lowest layer of bread in such a crisp way. Go early to get it as warm as possible, go home, get your Olive oil and cheese and enjoy the moment. Maybe get two, one for yourself and someone else. The dessert are good but some taste better than others but I feel the brick oven bread is the best though some may feel it is to hard. Well it's based because it is a different texture. Some times of the day it is difficult to find seating. Also next door they have hot foods but a bit around after 8 P.M. they tend to stop serving hot foods but still do sandwich and some other foods from menu. The hot foods vary each day. The burgers are juicy depending how you prefer them and they tend to be three patties. The fries mostly hand cut. I've had grilled steak sandwich as well. Bland, thin and at times bit of fatty portions along nothing like a thick steak which has marbling. Generally I ask for very well done which does almost dry it out but makes it easier for me to trim fat a bit and I ask for pepper as well as hot sauce which adds a bit flavor not to mention ask for cooked onions to it for same reason. Breakfast is nice enjoyed out front when weather permits. The omelette is a good size. The bagels are also rich tasty and not doughy. The sausage are links and not a Patty, thick and has flavor but not spicy. Generally split open...
