I really love how you can find authentic food from all sorts of countries in NYC! This time, we were looking for a quick bite, something German. There is a German butcher shop in UES with a sausage bar. There is a small counter with show window right below the sign, and this is where you order you food. If you are dining in,there is a small dining space at the back.
They had some Oktoberfest special items when we went, which was a giant pretzel. Of course we ordered one, and two kinds of wursts. The inside is small, with counter seats on both sides of the wall, total of maybe 10 seats or less.
For the wursts, we ordered one custom one, with the most traditional German sausage, Bratwurst with S&W Bavarian Sweet Mustard, S&W Sauerkraut, and Rotkohl Red Cabbage. The second one we ordered was a Currywurst, which is sliced Knackwurst topped with curry ketchup and curry powder. We also had a choice of having the wurst on Balthazar Brioche, or served âNakedâ â without the bun. They were both pretty amazing, and we enjoyed it a lot!
This was a great little lunch, I can see stopping by here for a good, solid snack as well. The female was really nice, a true German, and friendly to all customers. I would love to go back to taste more of their super tasty wursts! Read my full review of this eatery and food on my food blog,...
Read moreBeing vegetarian and being in New York, we felt deprived at not being enjoy a classic dish of New York, the humble hotdog. We researched and found Stubes, who are one of the few places that offer vegan versions, and made our way all the way over there from our Chelsea digs. Why no veggie hotdogs, New York? You would do so well! The place was a very vibey, tiny, ancient hole-in-the-wall joint with loud music playing and looked amazing, unchanged since the 1950s. However, the service was horrible to the point of being hostile, very unfriendly. We were the only ones in there. And got treated like we were idiots by the indifferent girl at the outside serving hatch. 2 vegan hotdogs, a disgusting, almost inedible potato salad, and a portion of two tiny greasy potatoe pancakes was almost 40 bucks, with free insults thrown in. I'd asked for pickle on my dog, and got yelled at for questioning where it was; it seemed to be invisible. Eventually the server believed me when I said she forgot the pickle, and practically threw a tiny portion at me. We felt very unwelcome, and I could understand why the place was empty on a Saturday...
Read moreMy German grandparents have been bringing me to Schaller since I was young and was very excited to hear they were opening this little food bar.
This new spot is GREAT. I have been here twice and unfortunately got the same thing twice so I can't offer much in terms of a varied review, but I will say what I got was great. I got the Schaller Double, but substituted in the knackwurst. It was great both times, although very messy for a place that doesn't have a bathroom to wash your hands in afterwards, so be warned! The second time I decided to use a fork and a knife for that reason.
We also got a side of the cucumber salad - super simple but SO GOOD. Have been getting this from Schaller since I was growing up and is a nice refreshing side to add to your meal.
Be warned that the seating is limited and there are only high tops. Also was unfortunate that the second time I went they were playing music that sounded to me more just like screaming and it was EXTREMELY loud...might be nice of them to maybe play something that appeals to a bit more of a...
