I have been coming here for many years since they opened. Over time the service has become worse and worse. The food can range from very good, depending on what you get, to absolutely horrible based on some inconsistencies which may range from what time you order or who is in the kitchen. Some days and nights the food comes very fresh and of great portions. Other times, particularly late at night, you may end up with spoiled rice and/or pasta, and very burned or small amounts of meat.
Their business is in a working class neighborhood which isn't a problem but they have seemed to over time become aggressive towards the clientele whom they assume are not continental Africans, Muslim, Asian or white. They seem to be hyper vigilant in assuming that any expression of concern or issue with their food is a means to defraud their business particularly if expressed by a Black American.
Be careful when ordering from them via an app, because their running a scam of completing orders for pick up in their system before a costumer arrives, thus listing the order as already picked up. Therefore whichever company that you've used to purchase your food will assume that your food was picked up and will not reimburse your order leaving you with money spent and no meal even though this business will have never even prepared your food at all. In my personal experience, I was ultimately left waiting at there location for more than 3 hours on the phone with the company from which I made the order having received nothing for my money and time having driven to their location for the pick up of my food which they confirmed was in their system after they initially told me that I had not even ordered anything in the first place. This was so strange because I have had a long and healthy personal rapport with the owner over the years and in this instance he treated me like we had never met before even though I had been joyfully spending my money in this establishment 3 times within the same month after having spent more than $200 within a single month.
As of late, the location has also been quite dirty when visiting in person with stains all over the walls and floor. I don't know what is going on with them, as they have more than enough staff and plenty of patrons who both visit and order via apps. You will also discover that they constantly change their prices depending on who is ordering and that if you visit multiple times that the cost of the same dish will not be the same as it was prior within intervals of the same or following day as a point of reference. You could assume that prices would be different for food weighed but I am referring to dishes which are not weighed that have a set price on their menu such as a fish and lamb.
The food can be very good at times but there is a real headache in their business practices being bad which in of itself can ultimately lead to an unsavory meal or risky behaviours which could be even assumed in relation to the preparation of their food. I have so loved introducing people to this place and championing it's presence in my neighborhood but going into their business or ordering takeout here is now becoming extremely risky and...
Read moreI ordered from Uber eats and was completely shocked at how large the portions are for the price AND SUPER FRESH! I ordered the whole chicken with onions dish and let's just say, I GOT THE WHOLE CHICKEN, from neck to tail (literally a long curled neck!), you could even still see the bumps from a freshly plucked chicken on the skin (like did they do this themselves?!) And for$16?!! I was super impressed with it! Also a HUGE portion of rasta pasta for $5 , and a hand made empanada for $2! JUST ORDER FROM HERE, I don't rave too often about the freshness and quality of food from a to go order and this is one that really impressed me!! They take delivery orders UNTIL 3AM EVERY DAY, where else are you going to get quality at that hour?! IT'S THE BEST OVERALL THAT I'VE FOUND FOR A LATE HOUR,...
Read moreThe African dishes that distinguish this restaurant from the others in Brownsville are kept in the kitchen and are not on display for self-served like the Caribbean and Soul foods. The proprietor prepares the African food orders away from public view, and the main ingredient(s) that actually make the dish is small. I ordered the mafe served with rice as per the menu, but I was charged for the rice separately as if it was a side order. I was charged $5.00 for the rice. And, there were only 4 tiny pieces of lamb in the peanut butter sauce. Their thiebu djeun order is mostly rice with a tiny portion of fish and vegetables. Buyer beware and I recommend that you check your African food orders...
