A month or two ago, we had a small group gathering at the bar; by the way, I have had a loyal customer for a few years, but in the end, something happened, perhaps due to a smaller-than-expected tip or because of something else that I forgot, one of the bartenders came charging out to me from a good 30 feet away behind the bar, after seeing me talking to the manager. He challenged me, and was saying something like " you have a problem with me?" As if asking me for a physical street fight. I said that to him then, replying that he was wrong, coming out to attempt to pick a fight while I was talking to the manager. After I left, I soon left a negative review, perhaps on Yelp or some website. I never gave it another thought since.
Tonight, 2 hours ago, and not concerned about the prior event, I went back by myself, noticing the night manager looked familiar but not the usual one that I saw and met; with further thought, I sat down. Then he came to me and kicked me out, saying things like I had an altercation with the bartenders the prior evening and asking me to leave. I told him again that under no circumstance should an establishment employee be permitted to verbally or physically challenge a customer, especially leaving his station, for tipping or perceived disrespect. Tonight, he did not dispute the bartenders leaving his station at the time. So, I left.
About 5 minutes after leaving, I realized that it was him, a stocky, Latin-looking person, and that is why I thought he looked familiar. He was the guy who came out behind the bar and charged at me at the host station. I returned and asked his name and position. He said Mario, the General Manager (???). We repeated our same conversation 5 minutes prior. He was now challenging me to post a comment on the web, further saying that it was no big deal and that he would take it down... I laughed in my heart as if somehow Joyce or him could tell Google what to do...
It is up to the real Anyhow,Management to decide what to do with their employees. He is a liability and a danger to the investors. We all know why. But it does not matter; I will never go back there anyway.
The food was excellent, with a lovely ambiance. Too bad a few bad employees seemed to be " Too eager to be offended, " quoting an...
Read moreUsually when you see a place that has only 5 star reviews, your antenna should go up and automatically assume that the owner has a lot of friends leaving reviews on Google and Yelp. I am pleased to report that I have no relationship to anyone who works there, and could not be more pleased to leave this 5 star review as follows:
Ambiance : Exactly what you expect from a Publik House - spacious, some cool antiquish furniture, beautifully appointed and huge bar, and tables for as far as the eye can see. It looked like they had a fireplace in there at one time, not sure if its against code, but would be really cool if they could get that working againfor these cold winter nights
Food : Such a diverse menu - from typical dishes like Shepard's Pie to Cheeseburges, but you might be surprised to find some delicious specialties like Pumpkin Ravioli, Prince Edward Island Mussels,
Top Round Steak, Korean Beef Lettuce Wraps and Pistachio Crusted Salmon. My party of 3 had all of them except for the Lettuce Wrap - and each tasted like a house specialty of an Italian, Steakhouse or Seafood place. Kudos to the chef for preparing such an eclectic menu, which normally means you get a bunch of random mediocre items, but not in this case - everything was absolutely delicious
Service: Not sure if he was the owner or manager, but had an excellent sense of humor and gave us a very warm greeting. The highlight of the evening may have been our server David - one of those servers who knows what you want before you can even ask for it, was pleasant and attentive without being the least bit over-bearing, and was able to accommodate some of the more specific requests from the group (ie. My girlfriend is on Keto, so they prepared her dishes to account for that. .
Everything is just so on point that it looks seamless, but I have owned restaurants for 5 years and nothing is ever seamless on its own, so i appreciate all the small details the owner has worked out ahead of time, and I feel comfortable in insuring you that any visit to Joyce Public House will be looked back upon with...
Read moreIt looks like a nice place to go out to for dinner and a drink. I just wish that they had played into the James Joyce theme a bit more.
Went at 4 pm on a Friday, so there wasn't very crowded which was nice. The interior is very well done, a nice pub atmosphere mixed with some "set piece" decorations. It's a bit dark, but I think that it helps to create a nice sense of closeness with the person(s) you are with. I didn't eat anything while I was there, so I can't confirm.
The bar is nice and, to my eye, was very well-stocked. I ordered a Tom Collins and was a bit disappointed as they did not make it properly even after I watched them look up the recipe. I next ordered the Rudy Bloom, the first major homage to the man the bar takes its name from, and enjoyed it much more than my first drink - it was a nice balance of sweetness and flavors and the bourbon really played off the other liquors very well. Since it's in New York, we're talking NYC prices for both drinks.
I was just a bit disappointed also that they didn't play into the theme of James Joyce much more than naming a few cocktails and food items, from what I could see. I hope that they will build out the theme a bit more and maybe do something special for Bloomsday! Overall, however, I had a very good time and would highly recommend visiting for a nice meal...
