I do the cooking in the house. I am also Catholic. This is the lent season, so for those of you who know Catholic lent tradition, you will know that we do not eat red meat on Fridays during the Lenten season, but are able to eat seafood. And because I did not plan for any meals this Friday, I decided to take the family out for fish and chips. Looking around my area, this is the only dedicated fish and chips I could find. My wife informed me that we had actually eaten here many many years ago during Lent, for the same reason, and I was excited to go back to see see how they were doing, although I don't remember what my first experience was like. My go-to used to be Bob's hoagies, but that business closed down a few years ago and the closest one of his franchises was too far away for me to drive today. It was around 6:00 in the evening and the business hours for this place. Noted that they close at 7:00 p.m., and I felt that would be enough time for them to make our order for us to sit down and have a meal there.
This is located in a shopping center in Newark, and it is the farthest shop on the building all the way to the left. It is a small mom and pop fish and chips restaurant, and is English style fish and chips. When we walked in, the first thing we noticed was that there was no dining floor. The dining area was sectioned off and looked like it was being used for storage, as though they had sealed it up for covid and never came back from that. So, the only option was to take out. I didn't like this idea, because my family once owned a fish and chips restaurant which was also English style, and I know that fish and chips is best eaten fresh out of the deep fryer, because the batter has a tendency to get soggy if you bag it up or wait too long to consume it afterwards because of the steam.
At any rate, we placed our order and waited for it to be made. It wasn't fast but it didn't take a long time, and once we got our order we jumped in the car and headed home.
When we got home, we took out the fish and chips. I'm happy to report that it made it home without getting soggy, and part of the reason for this was because when they bagged it they bagged it in an open bag, so it didn't have a chance to steam itself soggy. Before we left the restaurant they asked us if we wanted tartar sauce and vinegar, which we opted to get, however, we did not get ketchup because they didn't offer it. Ask for it or they may not offer it.
I'm happy to report that the fish and chips were quite good. The batter they use coats to fish in a way that isn't heavily textured. It lays flat on the fillet but had a good taste and did not retain much oil. I would not call this in oily fish and chips. The fish was white and flaky. The fries are steak cut, which is traditional for FnC and I didn't like them. I thought they tasted a bit like cardboard but my wife and daughter saw no problem with them. The main reason why I gave this restaurant a four-star, was because of the amount of tartar sauce that was given for our order was criminally sheisty. We had ordered two sets of three-piece fish with fries, and were given 3 to-go dip containers that were about half the size you'd expect fora typically sauce cup of tartar sauce. This is in no way enough for six full size pieces of battered fish. A single dip sauce was barely enough for even one piece of fish let alone 2. A FnC restaurant should know that tartar sauce is a significant part of the experience for those who enjoy tartar sauce with their fish. I can't comment on the malt vinegar portions, which were even smaller than the tartar sauce portions, because I don't particularly enjoy having vinegar with my fish and chips, so I don't know how much people typically want to have. But if you do like a significant quantity of malt vinegar, you're not going to get much here or you're going to have to ask for more.
The fish here is good. There is no dining in. They don't give you enough tarter sauce. Make sure you...
Read moreIf you enjoy a true classic fish and chips, then please know the negative comments about this place do not apply! The white fish inside the batter is always cooked well and doesn't have a funky after taste. The batter itself is very lightly seasoned and has a great bite with a nice crunch. Sure, they don't put all kinds of seasonings on it or loads of salt and pepper, but then that wouldn't be the traditional kind of fish and chips. To go with it, they have the most delicious tarter sauce you can find anywhere. It's so good. Especially with the deep fried prawns. Other than the fish and chips, fried prawns with a order of large tarter sauce, I haven't tried much else on the menu. But there is no need lol those items stand all on their own. Please, at least try this place and make up your own mind. I don't think...
Read moreThis was the WORST Fish and Chips I ever tasted bar none. The “fish” was not freshly battered and was the kind of pre-battered fish you buy in the frozen fish department…. barely edible and the “chips” where previously fried and re fried for my order. The lumpia was mini—which the sign did not state and were burnt. The burnt lumpia was the result of frying the rolls with both ends open instead of the correct way—both ends closed, hence the hot oil burned both ends and all one can taste is the burnt beef. Shame!!!!!!!!! Zero stars if I could give Zero stars I would. My 3-piece fish and order of Lumpia cost me over $15.00 and I threw it away as it was not fit for human consumption.
Please avoid this establishment at all costs—wish I have looked up the rating prior to losing my money—it was an...
