Just Fish Bar & Grill — Restaurant in Newark

Okay, Now you've obviously come to the reviews section (like myself) for a reason...so I'll tell you it with COMPLETE HONESTY. I visited on a Sunday evening around 6:45pm. (While I have read a few bad and good reviews, I still wanted to give them a try)

Upon arriving, I realized that the parking was limited, but not that bad. We walked in and was greeted by staff. The menu had plenty of options. The waitress was very pleasant and presented a friendly aura about her. We sat by the bar while we waited for our food. I was focused on how clean they were, and I found 0 issues. No flies of any sort like someone had previously mentioned. We ordered fried whitening and fries/chips. It took about 15 mins. During the wait, the owner offered a taste of their rum punch which was very good (I'm Jamaican btw, so that's a compliment). We got to the car, opened the plate which wad supposed to be "a small taste" ...well, we ended up having dinner right there. The fish was lightly seasoned and fresh, and the fries were also fried to perfection. I know in the urban community, high BP and diabetes is a huge issue and this restaurant is very mindful of that when seasoning. This is coming from a woman who can really cook, so it's no need for me to sugar coat anything. I think the issue is that people are so used to things with high salt content that they don't even realize it's not normal, nor healthy. Moving on...I see that they host events throughout the week (seafood buffet, live Jazz, holiday events). I thought that was cool. In my opinion, we are so quick to tear one another down based on some of these reviews. At least they are trying to have a "go-to" for folks in NJ. I will definitely be...

Completely disappointed in the customer service here. I've been coming here for years, recommended to friends and spend a ton of money because I like food. However the complete disrespect from the owner today was shocking and honestly disgusting. I called in a order and asked my uncle to go pick it up. When he arrived to pick it up the staff was completely unattentive. When they finally acknowledged him, he gave his name but they had the wrong name written down. When he corrected them to be sure it was correct order the owner told him, "It's the same thing, we got the food right." Completely shocked in what I heard, I gave a call to the restaurant to try and figure out what was going on and express my disappointments to which the owner told me, "there's no disappointment because the food is always on point." I thought that he was misunderstanding what I meant, so I asked him to let me finish to which he said "No, let me finish!" This is the OWNER of the establishment speaking to me this way. He would not let me finish and told me to just bring the food back and get my money back. Completely heartbreaking, because as I mentioned, I love the food and have been spending money here for years. Regular picks ups, ordered catering for holidays. You name it! Always recommend this place to people looking for soul food in the area. But clearly, there's no regard for loyalty here and no regard for the customer. I've spent way too much money there to be treated that way. So I got my refund and will never return. I will also make my friends and family aware of the way he "values" his longtime customers....

My friend and I dined at Just Fish on our lunch break. From our experience, I will not be returning. For starters we sat outside and flies were everywhere. The patio area is next to a vacant lot with trash and abandoned furniture so I am assuming that is where the flies are stemming from but they need to set up something to keep the flies away. It was very uncomfortable to dine. We moved inside before our meal came. My uptown was good but that was it. The sever accompanied it with our cornbread. The butter added to the top of the cornbread was so salty. We waited over 40 minutes for our meals after finishing the cornbread. I ordered the salmon cakes with collard greens and macaroni and cheese. The salmon cakes were made from all canned salmon. I noticed just from cutting it open because the salmon was white and no hints of pink. I was served two and I had to push through to finish one because I was very hungry. The sides were standard. The macaroni and cheese tasted like it was in a warmer all day because the noodles were mushy and over cooked. I work walking distance from Just Fish and I would’ve loved to make this a lunch staple, but due to my first and only experience I will not...
