Not quite sure what others who purchased through Groupon or LivingSocial were expecting from their experience? Yes a portion of it goes towards the Lighthouse Preservation Society as a donation, reserving the "once in a lifetime" type of space and the meal. I also used a voucher from this group and saw on one of the tips that they book for weekends very far out. So the only downside, unfortunately as expected the Valentine's weekend slots were already filled so we waited until the first weekend in April to go (which I'm sure was much nicer weather for going outside!) It's definitely a better value to make the reservation for 4 instead of just 2.
We reserved a lunch time and met our waitress Melissa at the Starboard Galley restaurant who was so nice and helpful. We made our bathroom trip since we didn't want to have to make any unnecessary trips down the dizzying stairs. She lead us all the way up to the lighthouse and showed us what to do with the trap door the folds down so it's more comfortable to move around. I'll admit the space was a little tight for 4 people but not a big deal. Make sure you wear comfortable shoes for the climb up the steps and the ladder. Props to our waitress for having to do this 4 or 5 times to bring up our food! Amenities include a Captain's Log dating back to I think 2008 where people can write about their experience. It's so nice to read about the engagement / anniversary stories then adding our own. There's also a stereo that you can put in some CDs that they have provided to add some ambiance music. The best part of course is the little latch door that leads outside onto the deck of the lighthouse so you can walk around and take in the 360 view of Newburyport.
They also gave us a number to call down when we decided what we wanted to order from the set menu included in the voucher, 1 appetizer, 1 entree with 2 sides, and 1 dessert. To quench our thirst from the long drive, there were 4 Poland Spring waters in the ice bucket waiting for us. I believe if you wanted to order from their regular menu you would just need to pay something additional. We ordered: Clam chowder, iceberg wedge salad, Lobster rolls with coleslaw and fries, Grilled Haddock with rice pilaf and beets, Strawberry short cake, bread pudding, and chocolate cake. Of course since the waitress had to ascend all those steps with the food it had to be packaged in a to-go manner with saran wrap or in boxes so it would not spill. They provided proper silverware/plates to transfer the food onto so it wasn't an issue for us.
We all had a lovely time in the Newburyport Lighthouse! I would definitely recommend this experience and if you use a Groupon voucher it's a better value to...
Read moreMy now fiancé took me to the lighthouse to propose. It was the most romantic perfect proposal that I could ever dream of. He booked a dinner session (5:00 pm-10:30 pm) for a Sunday in May. He had his friend arrive at 5 to set up the decorations (flowers, candles, signs) and our private hostess Pam let her up. We arrived at 6 pm and once we got upstairs, he handed his phone to Pam to record his proposal. After the proposal, we went outside on the balcony where Pam took sunset pictures of us with my ring. We then decided to order from Modern Oak Grill which was absolutely delicious. Pam was able to time out our meal so each course was 20 min apart. She also had drinks in ice staying cold for us. There was also a stereo system that allowed bluetooth capacity so we were able to pair my phone and I could play a spotify playlist. Overall the location was perfect and I could not have asked for anything better. We will definitely be coming back for future anniversaries!
Just something to consider: There are many stairs and a ladder so maybe steer away from heels or long dresses (thankfully I was prewarned to not wear them haha), and if you are afraid of heights, this might not be the best place. If you want to go out on the balcony you have to crawl through a short door so be warned If you are tall watch your head! My fiancé is 6'3 and he hit his head a couple times on the chandelier. there is no bathroom, we used the restaurant next door but by the time we left the lighthouse around 9:30 pm, the...
Read moreI am not sure why others gave good ratings. First off, the lighthouse is small, about 8ft diameter so don't let the pictures fool you, it is cramped up in there. Bathroom is obviously outside. Next, the email I got prior to the reservation said to call the light house preservation (LHP) and pick the menu items to make sure you have your choices available. When I called LHP, they said you don't need to pick menu items ahead of time. Got there and met the waiter, kind man. Chatted a bit, we picked appetizers. Then he told me afterwards when he was bringing the food up that my choice for appetizer wasn't available and what annoyed me was he did not ask me if I had a second choice. He went on to ask for main entree options. We gave it and then when it came time for dessert he said sorry, only the orange cake is available and restaurant is about to close. Not even a menu card explaining what's in it. So we didn't get dessert either. This was pre-paid to be a 3 course meal and I did not get it. He even gave the bill to us at the end, we had to tell him it was pre-paid. Overall not satisfied with it, won't be going back. If it was paid to be a 3 course meal, it should be honored, no excuses. Also when asking about the bathroom situation he confidently said there is a bar that is open late so not to worry. At around 10 at the end of the night, the tone changed to, "oh let me see if the bar is still open since it's late" thank god it was!. Just be cautious of this...
