The crust is awesome, really enjoyed it. Pizza itself tastes great. However it was cut way off off-center, frustrating. Again the pizza tastes good. My biggest gripe here, the toppings were center loaded, they need to extend to the crust (evenly spaced, sure) especially if you want to charge $3 and $4 per topping, which is a little excessive to charge for a couple of small spoonfuls of ricotta. For a 16" pie, 80% of my toppings were within a ~9" diameter originating at center which has a visual aesthetic that I made a poor decision to add toppings contributing to a slow regret of dining based on the perceived value.
The restaurant was pretty slow when I was in there. Apathetic teenager poured my beer and then just sorta stood there the entire time. The televisions are hard to see from the bar stools considering the large light fixtures hanging above bar and awkward angling of TV. Lighting in general was good and there was some music playing. I asked the employee how many IPA's they had on draft and he pointed to a couple tap handles but I don't think they were all IPA. There's a weird mesh between service staff too young to drink and them serving you alcohol. Vibe check ultimately is off for a place that technically has a bar but does not function as one. I think the experience would have probably been better sitting at a table.
All in all, good joint (hence my 4 star review), I probably will skip it for the next several several pizza nights and try it again in a couple months. Taste is great, pizza's cut (I get this can be a one-off problem, a roll of the dice) and topping concentration on surface of pie was not good. You should reconsider how much you're charging per topping on create-your-own pies.
PS: Please get some pineapple, disappointed to see you carry "Ham" on the menu but not its most famous sidekick...
Read moreEaten here twice- once with a buddy and the second time with my wife and son. First time I had wings- they were ok. Nothing crazy, nothing bad. Service was very par for the course but found it odd the server was rushing to get us to pay. I think she asked me 3 times if I was ready to pay while I was still eating. Second time I brought my family because MnG was closed. We were sat down almost immediately, and before even getting my son strapped in his high chair the server asked 'what are you having to drink and eat'. I told her we needed a minute to go over the menu and asked for a kids menu, of which she said they 'dont do'. After asking for a minute to look over the menu, she returned 25 minutes later to take our order only after I walked over to get her attention. I'd like to point out for that amount of time, she and literally five other servers hung out at the little bar near the register and didn't glance at us once until I ultimately stood up and walked up to her and said we're ready. When she came back and asked what we would have, I asked her if it was really impossible to add a single topping to a signature pizza that she said something to the effect of "that's why it says that on the menu" in a condescending tone. We ordered a signature pizza and waited for 25 more minutes. The pizza was good but very greasy and by this point we had been seated for 50min without food. Its wild you can't add toppings to a pizza, and the server really contributed to an underwhelming experience. The prices are high for what the food is, pizza and wings, and a pizza place one block down the street does what karvelas does far better, faster, cheaper, and will get your food to you in less than an hour, without the poor/sub par service. Oh, and you can add whatever you want...
Read moreOur family has been looking for a proper pizza joint since we moved to Alabama this past summer. I had come to accept that it wasn't to be and I would only get a decent pizza on my trips back east. And then we stopped in to a little spot in a Newnan, Georgia. Hello Karvela's! Hallie was our server today and oh my goodness she was top notch. Hallie had all the patience in the world explaining all the wing sauce flavors and what "Chicago sausage" is. (I like sliced Italian sausage, my wife likes crumble...this was somewhere in between) From getting our drink orders to bringing out the two full pies to go after finishing the pie and wings we got for lunch she always had a smile and right on point. The pizza is the truest to classic New York Style we have found and it absolutely doesn't disappoint. As for the person complaining that it was like Little Ceasars and would prefer Hungry Howie's clearly doesn't know squat about good pizza. This place isn't anywhere near the fast food "crap" pizzas out there. The wings were outstanding. Cooked to perfection and sauced just right. We will definitely be trying them again in several more flavors. And finally for this trip the fries. When they arrived I was afraid that only my oldest daughter and I would be eating them as they appeared to be peppered rather abundantly. NOPE! They were sprinkled with an incredible blend of seasoning that just made you want to eat them all. Thanks again Hallie and the entire Karvelas team for not only providing an amazing lunch and service, but restoring my faith that good pizza can be found in the south. It is worth the hour drive for us to visit often. See...
