I was very excited to visit the McRitchie-Hollis Museum this morning (Tuesday, April 9th, 2024), in part to complete a written museum review for a college World History II course. The McRitchie-Hollis Museum was one of only a few approved museums, and as I am a Newnan resident, I thought it most appropriate to visit a local museum. I visited the museum website at the beginning of last week, checked the museum hours and planned my visit. Hopefully you can understand my frustration when I arrived at 10:15 am, during the posted hours of operation, to find the doors locked and staff refusing entry. I was informed that new museum exhibits were being installed and the museum would be closed for the remainder of the week. There are no signs posted at the museum indicating that it is closed, conversely the hours posted on the door would indicate that it is indeed open. I was told the information was posted on the website just this weekend, which if that is the case, that is entirely too late to post about a planned closure of the museum. I checked the website again when I returned home and there is no mention of the museum being closed on the website's home page. The hours of operation are still posted showing the museum open 10am to 4pm Tuesday to Friday, with "Come see us!" and "Call or drop by the museum today!" prominently displayed on the website. The only mention of the museum being closed is within a Google Event calendar at the bottom of the Programs and Events page. The Google listing for the museum, which the museum website incorporates on multiple webpages, currently shows the museum is open, as does the Museum's official Facebook page. Further, there are no posts about a planned closure on the Facebook page. This is a horrible way to keep the community informed about museum operations and is not conducive to keeping the public excited about the area's history. Please take the time to properly update your website and facebook page to properly communicate that the museum is...
Read moreI took my grandchildren here to pick up 'Passports' for learning about places to visit in Coweta County. We were greeted by Museum Manager, Taj Stephens. He was a great guide, informing us of the exhibits in the McRitchie-Hollis Museum. The girls enjoyed it and learned a lot from the tour. I have lived here for 41 years and didn't know about a lot of the history that Taj told us. The passport program is for children to explore Coweta during the summer. If you have children, I highly recommend it. There are so many museums and places to see. We have a great community here and lots of place to enjoy the outdoors and indoors. There are many opportunities to learn more about our county. I will add...
Read moreOccupying another fine red-brick Greek Revival style building, today’s McRitchie-Hollis Museum was built in 1937.
Now fully renovated to its former glory, it acts as an introduction to what life was like in the American south during the Great Depression of the 1920s and 1930s, and the Second World War which followed.
Its exhibition spaces contain original furniture from the Hollis family who had previously called the building home. Visitors are also able to see how simple kitchen and bathroom facilities were roughly one hundred years ago.
A beautiful curving staircase leads upstairs, from where visitors are able to take in the lawns and mature...
