“You Stay Too Long!!”
My wife, two daughters, and I were visiting Newport Beach and decided to try Ohana Sushi & Ramen. What we hoped would be a pleasant dinner turned into one of the most disappointing—and frankly insulting—dining experiences we’ve had.
We were greeted by a young gentleman who was very kind and welcoming. He handed us menus and seated us at an outdoor table facing Balboa Blvd. After a long wait, he came back to inform us we needed to place our order inside at the counter. That was our first hint something was off.
We ordered a mix of appetizers, specialty rolls, a soup, a poki bowl, and drinks—just under $145 total with tip. But when the food arrived, the presentation was shockingly low-effort: paper water cups, paper boats, soup in a paper cup, plastic utensils, and wooden chopsticks. All this at fine dining prices. Our table, while wiped down, felt sticky. The bathroom? No toilet paper.
The food tasted fine, but portions were noticeably small compared to standard sushi places—again, not in line with the pricing.
Then came a serious issue: my wife, who is severely allergic to shrimp, discovered tempura shrimp in the Fire Crunch Roll. The menu made no mention of shrimp. I calmly brought it to the counter and asked the young man to confirm. He did. The older sushi chef overheard and abruptly interjected that the tempura shrimp was the “cracker” part of the roll. When I pointed out that shrimp was not listed in the ingredients and told him about my wife’s allergy, he snapped, “What about the Dragon Roll?” I said that was for my daughter, who isn’t allergic.
I politely asked if he could remake the roll without shrimp. He replied, “I make it, but you pay for new roll.” No concern for the allergy. No apology. Just more money. Wanting my wife to have something to eat, I agreed—another $17.24 out of pocket.
We still tried to enjoy our time together and had some great family conversation. I even bussed our own table to keep the area tidy.
Then, at 8:10 PM—after 1 hour and 40 minutes of dining—the chef stepped out to the entrance, looked at me, and snapped, “You order more?” I said, “No thanks, we’re good.” He immediately barked, “You stay too long,” and waved for us to leave.
I responded, “The $162 I spent doesn’t permit us to sit and have dinner and conversation?” He stormed back inside, shaking his head. The restaurant was not full—only three other tables were occupied—and they were closing in 50 minutes. It felt like a deliberate and rude dismissal.
As we got up to leave, another customer who witnessed the scene said, “That is totally ridiculous!” We couldn’t agree more.
This place charges high prices, offers fast food-level presentation, has poor allergy transparency, and worst of all—treats customers with blatant disrespect.
We will not be returning. Spend your money somewhere that values customers—and basic courtesy....
Read moreThe food is great, but my one star comes from an incident where I caught them essentially “stealing” and charging my card an unauthorized 10% tip. I called an order in and when I arrived my food order was bagged and ready with a receipt total attached. The total was $31.79 which included two additional up charges which I had asked for so no biggie. When I was rang up the total changed from $31.79 to $34.96, I didn’t think anything of it and just assumed it was tax that had not yet been added. I then added an additional 15% tip to the total $34.96 for a grand total of $40.20. After getting home and taking a closer look at the initial receipt of $31.79 I saw that tax had already been added, which led me to question why the total at ring up was higher if tax and up charges were already included. So I did the math and coincidentally the difference in the two totals was exactly 10%. So the restaurant took it upon themselves to add a 10% tip charge, and I tipped another 15% on the total that already included a 10% tip charge. I called and the young man who answered the phone began stumbling over his words when questioned about the suspicious 10% charge and came up with a story that the initial up charges were not enough and his chef asked him to charge more. Ok, so if that was the truth why wouldn’t I have been charged an extra $1.00 or $.50 like the first two up charges I had approved? Why was the second up charge an exact 10% of the total??? This restaurant was caught charging a tip that was not approved and then tried to lie. I would double check all totals if you eat here. I will not be back as I cannot trust this business...
