Stopped here after a morning trip to the Cliff Walk nearby. I had done my research (as always), so I was pretty comfortable going in for the first time. Location is awesome, it's like literally RIGHT in the middle of everything, and almost right across the street from where we like to park, so pretty sweet right out of the gate there.
We arrived around 1pm on a Saturday afternoon (in January), and there was no wait; but the place wasn't empty either. I'd say for a cold winter day in Newport, it was pretty hopping actually. Guy that seated us was nice enough, but kind of distant and weird. No biggie, he sat us and that was the last we saw of him. Waitress came over fast, and overall was super attentive. We weren't in a hurry really, but we didn't want to dawdle too long, and she kept right on top of us which was nice. She had kind of a weird accent and there were a few missteps in communication, but again...we got through it were happy.
Food-wise, we were actually more than happy! Sometimes I like to pretend I'm one of those cool Irish guys with the thick accent and the bad teeth and the drinking problem, so I went with the Scotch Eggs appetizer and the Fish and Chips. Both amazing...perfect actually. Wife and Daughter went with a Chicken Cranberry sandwich and Onion Soup appetizer and were both super pleased. Son had a Duck Burger (which I thought was kind of strange, but he's kind of a strange kid...so), which he didn't LOVE, but he said it was good. I tried a couple he had leftover and I tended to agree. It was good, but a bit on the dry side. Honestly, I'm not a huge duck fan anyway, so I wouldn't let that stop you. Overall on the food, kudos. I felt Irish...even if just for a few minutes.
Seating was a bit on the tight side, but again...not that crowded. I'm thinking if it was packed though, we might have felt cramped. They did sit us in a little dining area to the right overlooking the street, which was nice.
If you're looking for a quick, quality bite in Newport, or even if you're looking to hang out and kill some time at the bar, this place seems like a great choice. But again, I'm not ACTUALLY Irish. An actual Irish person might be a little...
Read moreWhat an amazing meal! My best buds and I had just returned from a treacherous journey and we required nourishment. Upon entrance into this fine establishment, our jaws were dropped by the ornate Irish decor. The multi-person bathrooms were pleasant to the nose, mouth, and weenie. The dual urinals provided a unique challenge, but we were all able to crowd around. Also, there was ample room for Adam to change his diaper after he mistook the Dyson hairdryer for a toilet, and splashed urine all over his clothes. I could go on all day about the bathrooms, but our waitress deserves high praise as well. Her mannerisms, timeliness, and oddly charming personality were a delight to witness. This was especially appreciated while dealing with my high-maintenance, special needs son. Adam is 27 years old, but he looks like he is 16, and behaves like he is 5. Throughout the night, he wildly shrieked, violently squirmed, and made a whole lot of noise, our waitress kept a smile on her face and served the food as if he were any other child without a habit for throwing up on the floor. The food was just as delicious as our waitress looked; my bangers and mash provided a delectable explosion of joy in my mouth when combined with liberal amounts of malt vinegar. Speaking of malt vinegar, Adam discovered that it goes well with everything, including apple juice and his milk (in a sippy cup). The frothy mixture certainly generated a few disgusted remarks, but the kind waitress supported Adam's experimentation, and even took a sip when he offered her one! What a champ! In conclusion, Adam and the nine other children who we paid to spend the day with him definitely enjoyed their meal. For a brief moment, we almost forgot about his debilitating lack of awareness in social situations, which can become embarrassing when your son reportedly shrieks the names of his utensils. In all, this restaurant provided a positive environment for my son to be himself and gave the rest of the party a meal we won't...
Read moreThis offers solid pub food and a good space. I came with a large group and we made a reservation same day and sat upstairs. It’s wasn’t too loud because upstairs was mostly just our group, and we were able to have conversations and hear one another. We tried all sorts of stuff and everyone was satisfied with their food. My chicken curry was decent, a good pub curry, with a thick brown sauce, definitely different from an Indian restaurant, it didn’t blow my mind, but it was a good warming stew sort of food. A couple of people have raved about the lamb burger. A friend enjoyed he lamb stew. Irish onion soup, as we guessed, is French onion soup with dubliner cheese in lieu of gruyere. The fried pickle app involves thick pickle spears, not chips or thin pickle strips, but it was good and well handled. The fried pickles came with a mayo based sauce, but there was also malt vinegar on the table.
I ordered an old fashioned because the description on the menu looked great, and that’s the reason for going to three stars from what would probably be four based on everyone’s satisfaction with their food. The old fashioned came with a lot of small ice pieces and was watery and largely flavorless from the moment I got it. I’m used to a single big ice cube that doesn’t dilute he flavor of the whiskey, and this was very disappointing. One friend enjoyed his Irish coffee. Another ordered a whiskey ginger, and it came with ginger ale, which was what she wanted, although I would have hoped for ginger beer had it been me.
The service was good,...
