Dixie Chili has been around since 1927 years and was opened only a few years after empress... The Newport location is the one I was taken to.by my uncle when I was a kid. I have not had it in years... but I made a point to go there cause I always remember it as DELICIOUS... AND IT WAS I visited today and we shared some stuff. You walk in order and take your tray down the line and get your drinks then food... and if it's a lil longer prep they'll tell you they bring it out to you...
The Cheese Coney The overall experience is wonderful. The taste great... First thing you notice is the bun is soft and not super dense... its not like the dense dry buns from local large chains... It's not too dry not too moist.. then theres the chili... its very good and they put an ample portion on a coney "so hunch over when eating cause it could drip out the back that's a good thing" they put a light coat of onion so not overpowering.. and the mustard was just right... not too much or too sour... then thers the soft Tuft of cheese piled on top... Their chili doesn't have a spicy kick so it's just satisfying... although a lil hot sauce on it later proved to pair well with the chili like it activated the spices in your mouth for a new flavor..."I recommend try without hotsauce first"
THE CHILI CHEESE FRIES ...OMG... I will say no matter where you go chili cheese fries are expensive... BUT they use WAFFLE FRIES! this was a whole new texture I never knew I needed in my life. They are crisp and the chili and cheese attop them is so good and easier to eat than others... "again try without hotsauce first"
We also ordered chili cheese sandwiches so that means no hotdogs But you get more cheese and it seemed a lil more onion on them. Delicious.... oh BTW the hotdogs in the coneys where dense they tatsed and had mouth feel of a good quality wiener.
We had to try a side of Gyro meat cause at this point we where getting full and couldn't do a full gyro... cause from what we saw they are a decent size. So a side with a side of Taziki... The meat was very good and the taziki is outstanding with the meat... We of course got the large drinks with the plastic cup to take home...
I want to go back and have their 3 and 4 way... one thing I was impressed with was the oyster crackers... Westminster Bakers Co. Is the brand they have and It literally is a game changer... They have a subtle density and crispness that doesn't instantly turn mushy in soup, chili, or Cincinnati chili.... Another reason I need to come back... Also they are not cheap... a big bag is twice the price of other brands.... that is for good reason... I swear whole foods is gonna catch on to how many small packs I take when I get their soup lol... that brand of oyster Cracker is the bomb... So if you like quality... dixi chili does it right... and personally I think it should be Dixie Chili and empress chili fighting for dominance... not goldstar and skyline... There are four chilli places I think that are better than those two brands .... cause skyline ain't it especially on quality lately... they...
Read moreStopped in because we were thirsty and had a few minutes before our bus came. I ordered two drinks and three coneys to go. I had to repeat myself three times to the girl taking my order because for whatever reason it was too difficult to understand two coneys with mustard and one with mustard and onion. We got our food and drinks and went to wait for the bus. I checked the receipt and the two coneys were rung separate from the other one. They were packaged that way too, so I figured they got the order right. I opened the one coney and ate it and it was the one with onions. My daughter proceeded to take a bite out of what was supposed to be a coney with just mustard. Nope it had onions too. Then a bite out of the other one with mustard. Nope onions on that one as well. At this point I called the store which was two blocks from our bus stop. I believe I spoke with the person that made the coneys incorrectly. She stated we would have to bring the coneys back to get a credit. She said she remembered me (yeah we just left the store). Okay, so if you know you made our food incorrectly why do we need to come back? (I have back issues, so no). My bus was a block away and I wasn't waiting another hour in the heat with my asthmatic daughter so you can fix the food that not only one employee messed up, but two of you. Plus, the coneys were really greasy and soggy and falling apart. Not like other food I have had from there on past visits. I don't recommend this location and won't eat there anymore after this. I've never been treated rudely at this location in the past but there were a bunch of teenage kids working there today when we stopped in. Totally unprofessional and a waste of my money since the food went into the trash. Thanks...
Read moreI will Never go to Dixie chili again. I ordered two coneys with extra cheese, extra onion and extra mustard and two with extra mustard no onion. I WATCHED the girl tell the boy, two mustard no onion and two with heavy everything. And I got given two with almost no mustard no onion, and two with no mustard, no onion, and a regular amount of cheese. It's almost 90 degrees today. I walked back to far West End of Newport, started to eat, discovered how wrong it was, and called Dixie Chili. I got told, bring back the food and we'll make it right. You should have done that the first time.. So that's thirty extra blocks I would have to walk, in the heat, just to fix THEIR mistake. According to their policy, you have to stop eating your messed up meal, (that my elderly Aunt ate anyway cause she was hungry,) walk back across town again to bring the food they messed up back, just to be given new food, this time properly prepared. I thought I had already done that but apparently not. So if you don't stick your fingers into your coneys, pull off the cheese and dig around examining what is on them and whether or not it's made right before you leave the store, you're just shht out of luck. That is a disgusting way to treat people, to see what they asked for, be told AGAIN how they wanted it made, then shrug, not give them what they paid for, and it's just oh well, too bad, I don't care. Seriously bad...
