A dinner at Scales & Shells is delightful memorable experience despite the Pandemic My husband and I visit Newport every few years and always enjoy walking on Thames Street. We love window shopping and checking out restaurant store fronts. Scales & Shells was always packed with happy diners. The atmosphere always impressed as a place that I must go to someday. Friday October 30th was stormy. My husband and I read on the website that reservations were not needed. We were interviewed for Contract Tracing purposes and then seated at a table in the center of the dining area. With the help of our waitress, Grace, we selected a bottle of 2017 Rocca Giovanni Langhe Chardonnay. The Chalkboard menu has many choices. We chose an appetizer of fresh grilled octopus with red shallots. We know from past experience that octopus is a measure of restaurant quality. If octopus is not fresh, nor not cooked right, the taste and texture are awful. Our best experiences with octopi have included restaurants in Ponte Delgada and in Little Italy, NYC. We were very impressed with the mesquite grill flavor. The texture suggested the meat was very fresh. We really loved this dish. The red shallot sauce begged for bread to enjoy every bit of it. Grace kindly brought us more bread for this purpose. Our choices for main dishes included Grilled Monkfish with Green Olive Tapenade and Skate Piccata with linguine and capers lemon olive oil. A side of grilled asparagus was included. I am including photos of these beautiful dishes that will hopefully show the great presentation and generous serving sizes. We were hungry and enjoyed this feast very much. The monkfish was grilled perfectly and tasted great with the sweetened green olives. I think golden raisins were included in the tapenade. The skate was very fresh and delicious. The capers were plentiful and mild in taste suggesting that the brine had been rinsed away. The linguine worked well with this dish. Overall, we commend Scales & Shells for offering an incredible dining experience despite the challenges presented by the Pandemic. While we felt safe dining in from a public health perspective, we realize that restaurants need more customers to survive. During our hour-long dining time, we were the only customers seated at a table.

Being a NYer that lives close enough to travel to Little Italy in NYC, we can be pretty particular and fussy about our food. ESPECIALLY about our Italian pasta restaurants and seafood. This place was recommended and booked for me on behalf of the nearby Vanderbilt hotel. I'm glad I came out of my shell and shelled out here instead of eating at the hotel. So, let’s talk about the food. I had the Bibb Lettuce salad, the linguine and Seared Scallops with Togarashi. So let’s get it started with the salad. It’s par for the course and good to start off with. It’s nothing to hype about. Don’t worry, things get better and appetizing, I promise. The scallops and linguine were definitely something that should be of note. Both were a delectable delight, especially the linguine. The linguine had clams and was made with a white wine sauce. The seared scallops were nice, soft and spongy. They weren’t overcooked or rubbery in texture. They were basically cooked and seared to perfection. The sauces made the seafood flavor pop and weren't overwhelming. The edamame was a good pairing to help with the scallop’s flavor profile. So in closing, it’s time to Shell out a 5 Star review for 5 Star service. A special shout out goes out to Kylie who was an excellent and attentive waitress and the bearded bloke in the blue blazer that came to check in on my mom and I. He must have been the manager. I didn’t catch his name, but he did come in to check and see if my mom and I were enjoying our food. Bring Your Appetite and Be Impressed because I was. When I visit this town again, I will definitely be stopping by Scales and Shells for another plate of perfection. The only negative gripe that I have is that I wish that they would open earlier.

One of my favorite restaurants of all time! If you do have time to visit Newport, come to this restaurant and definitely order the lobster fra diavolo; it is so delicious and they give you so much seafood and pasta. If you’re coming on a weekend/holiday or you know it’ll be busy, I’d suggest coming to the restaurant about 15 minutes before it even opens. We got there about 10 minutes before and there was already a line to get in. There are no reservations, so you have to get there early; otherwise you could wait awhile. I’ve been to this restaurant many times over the years and I never tire because the menu is always changing with fresh new items. This time we tried the raw oysters, a grilled octopus leg, and the fried calamari to start us off. The oysters were melting in your mouth and you can just taste how fresh it is. If I had a second stomach, I would just try everything from their raw bar. The octopus leg and calamari were also fantastic. The food came out fairly quickly as well, which is always a plus. The main dish of the day is lobster fra diavolo, which includes lobster, clams, mussels, squid, and at the bottom is a load of pasta. It is a bit spicy, so if you don’t handle spice too well, make sure to tell your server, but it is for sure worth ordering. I would recommend this to anyone who loves seafood and even if you don’t, this could change your mind.

We just happened to be walking down the street and came upon this place. We were seated rather quickly and our server was friendly. As far as the service, it was top notch - our server was attentive, helpful with the menu, and accommodating to our needs. As far as the food goes, it was nothing special, but a bit on the pricey side. Maybe that's just a product of it's location, but I would expect more. The oysters were smallish, the bread was cold, and the cocktails were so-so (I had an Old Fashioned that was very fruity and not what I expected). The fish I had was well cooked, if not a bit on the bland side despite the horseradish salsa it was topped with. All in all, this was an average restaurant and judging by the reviews of the restaurants surrounding it, may be worth slipping if you're not from around the area.

Good but not quite what we had expected. Seafood was fresh and pasta homemade. We got Lobster Fra Diavolo and Linquini with Clams. Both could have had a little more flavor and the linguini was a little dry. 3 manhattans - all made differently (inconsistent) and something was off with the last one making it hard to drink. We also got creme brûlée and it could have used a touch of vanilla or something - just plain old custard. The staff wasn’t great about clearing away dirty dishes or finished drinks. It was a casual environment than anticipated and the staff uniform is super ugly (not something I ever imagined I’d share in a review but worth mentioning). Could be more professional all around. A bit overpriced for the value.

Got a reservation on Sunday night after a great weekend at Newport Jazz. Super friendly and attentive staff. Despite some negative reviews I've seen, the seafood menu was very comprehensive. While a bit on the pricey end, it ended up being $80 per person with 3 swordfish entrees, salad, lobster bisque, shared grilled prawns and clam cakes. Bisque: creamy, several warm chunks of lobster. Could use a bit more seasoning like salt/pepper. Grilled prawn and risotto: although an entree, makes a great appetizer. Char grilled to perfection with a very tasty risotto. Grilled swordfish: very tender and flaky with good charred flavor. Side spinach with corn and olives added the perfect earthy acidity.
