The Roof Deck at The Vanderbilt — Restaurant in Newport

I would not recommend if you have a large group.

The day before our reservation, they called to take a credit card and tell us about a minimum. The minimum was not the problem- but when I made the reservation with the assistant food and bev person, no minimum was ever noted.

When we arrived, despite confirming the day before, they appeared surprised we were there. They sat our group of 17, at the corner of the bar with 4 barstools for approximately 30 minutes. When we brought it up with the hostess, they moved us to the railing by the entry door and two tables behind the railing (still not enough seating for 17). Our group generally stood and was in everyone’s way for the entire night. I made this reservation months before going. Looking around, there were several groups who were seated in areas that would have been much better for a large group and who were receiving table service. We went up to the bar to order individual drinks.

Throughout our reservation, the hostess working rolled her eyes multiple times at girls in the group taking pictures and pushed through our group to take other reservations to their table while we were standing. Again, we were aware we were in the way. However, we were given an area without enough seating for 17.

While the bar tenders we worked with were great, the lack of organization and lack of space for us definitely impacted our experience. We spent a large amount of money here and were generally treated like we were inconveniencing the staff. The roof top is beautiful and there isn’t much like it in Newport. However, after this experience, I would hesitate to recommend it to anyone visiting Newport, especially those with a big group. I wasn’t really impressed with the drinks up here, but everything else about this place makes it worth a visit. There was a wait when we initially checked in, but we found that tables moved fast and we were able to enjoy the town for around 20 minutes until we were texted about availability. On that note, the host staff were amazing and very helpful, offering directions around the hotel and how to get around, as well as clear explanations on wait times. They were so amazing! The view is literally perfect. We were lucky enough to grab a spot right around sunset. As I mentioned before, I wasn’t obsessed with any of the drinks I tried, but they’re good enough to enjoy with that kind of view. Definitely a spot to check out...

I can’t speak to the food because we just had sunset drinks. But in terms of drinks if you make a reservation you will get a table…. But the tables don’t have the best views. The self seating bar does. We walked in on a Thursday evening around 7 pm and found a seat at the bar. The service is a bit slow and not at all up to the standards of the hotel on the first floor. However i would go back to enjoy the great views . There is only one bathroom upstairs that is right next to where the elevator is that leads to a bit of a crowded feeling that characterizes the whole place.
