I was visiting a friend that just moved to North Bergen, and she said, "Pick a place for dinner, my treat!" I came across Locos Tacos and I love trying birria any chance I can. It's popularity seemed to explode over the past few years past its beginnings in Jalisco.
As I currently do not dine inside, I was pleased to find a nice outdoor eating area along the 77th Street side of the restaurant. It's colorful AND comfortable! I ordered the birria quesadilla - I needed some comfort food! - + a horchata while my friend ordered fish tacos + tamarind juice. The quesadilla hit all of the points you want a quesadilla to hit: crisp tortilla with a satisfying cheesy center. The birria is incredibly flavorful, as is the consomme. (Did I take a few spoonfuls to sip on? Short answer: YES. Ha!) The horchata was refreshing, not gritty like some horchatas I've had in the past. My friend enjoyed her meal; I didn't try the tacos, but did steal a few spoonfuls of her rice and beans.
Though full, my friend and I did split a large churro for dessert, filled with dulce de leche. I devoured my end too fast while my friend savored hers. Haha! But, again, it's what one would want in a churro: crisp, nice texture, a moist dough, a sweet spiced topping, and I did pick up a hint of saltiness from the dough in the best way to keep the flavors balanced!
The food, service, and ambiance were all great. Our server Ana was a delight to chat with as she made sure we were all set with our meals throughout.
Though I was feeling a margarita and was a little bummed to find no alochol on the menu - oh well, not a big deal at all! - I have fallen in love with this spot. My friend lives around the corner - lucky her! - but when I come back to North Bergen, I can't see myself NOT coming here again....
Read moreWe went for AYCE Taco Tuesday; the rules are 4 tacos with choice of 2 fillings for 1st plate, each plate after that 2 tacos of 1 filling until you say enough or you run out the clock at 45 mins. After 4 plates (10 tacos) and sampling 5 different fillings, my son and I were stuffed with 5 mins to spare.
The tacos were fantastic! They were without question the juiciest I've ever had, each flavor distinct and unique. The carnitas were porky and gelatinous with slow-cooked meat juice while the al pastor were tangy with bright flavors of pineapple and cilantro. The bistecca was intensely beefy and the shredded chicken tinga was like a sponge of chicken soup flavor. After clearing each plate, the waiter wasted no time taking our next order which arrived promptly steaming hot. My son had an horchata, which he described as a rich concentrated flavor like they expected the ice to melt into it - cinnamony in the sweetest way! Even though we are our fill of tacos, I love that the dessert menu includes some small bites priced accordingly if you didn't want a full sweet course - between churro and empanada, I couldn't resist the piping hot guava and cheese empanada.
Best tacos ever (I've been to Mexico City and Puebla), and I'll have to come back for their actual specialty,...
Read morei was really excited to see this place open. i love mexican food and i’ve been wanting birria tacos ever since the meal went viral on the internet. i was too lazy to find some until this place opened down the block.
i came in and spent 5 mins looking through the menu and i couldn’t find “birria tacos” exactly so i ordered what the menu called a “birria dinner”, which i thought would just be a bigger order.
i paid $17 just to find out its actually a platter with rice and beans that features the birria-style meat. it was an excellent portion definitely worth the price, but i was really disappointed when i realized i had ordered the wrong thing. i will take the blame this time and order the birria tacos next time. even looking at the menu, the only “signature tacos” listed are mignon, fish, and shrimp.
if you are going to model a restaurant after a trendy dish, at least make the dish easy to order 🙇🏻♀️
nonetheless i wish this new local business nothing but success. the flavor was great & authentic. i was just missing some more enthusiastic customer service and a clear menu. i’ll be back to give the real birria...
