I moved to Candler last year and discovered this place a few months after. I usually order delivery through Takeout Central, though I have also ordered for pick up on days where I'm going to drive by on my way home from work. Their tiny parking lot has kept me from eating there in person, since trying to turn onto Sand Hill that close to Brevard road is like playing Russian roulette.
The first couple of times, I was really impressed. The portions were large, the food was incredible, and they always hit the mark with the spice level. The third time I ordered delivery though, it took over 30 minutes longer than estimated and my food was cold. Takeout Central was great with customer service and even offered me a discount code for the next round - even though it was deemed to be Pad Thai's error. It took them an unreasonably long time to make part of the order while the remainder of it sat there and got cold with the driver.
From here, every time I've ordered food, something has been wrong. The delivery, quality, and portion size is always inconsistent. Sometimes I get soup with veggies in a plastic tub, other times I received a tub of broth with veggies in a separate container. Sometimes I get silverware, sometimes I don't, sometimes it's thai hot, sometimes there is no spice at all - never any consistency. The only reason I have continued to go is for convenience. Vegetarians have few options around Candler, and when the food has arrived perfect - it's amazing - so I keep going in hopes it'll be perfect again one day.
I called in an order for pickup the other day, giving them one last chance to get it right. I had finished up a long run in the mountains and was starving. I walked in, paid (which seemed far more expensive than usual, though I didn't want to argue), then drove home. Upon getting home, I realized they didn't give me rice, the soup tasted way different than normal and there was 0/0 spice despite asking for 5/5. I called and asked about a refund or to figure out how they would make it right, and the younger guy I spoke to on the phone said they'd "hook me up" next time I was in there then promptly hung up.
I really want to like this place, but the inconsistency and lack of integrity among the employees will be keeping me away for the...
Read moreWorst experience I've had in a very long time. Save yourself the read below and go elsewhere. Trust me!! Otherwise, here's how it went; Walked in and was sat in-between two couples in what is virtually a very small house. I could've lifted my elbows to hit these people and it was just an uncomfortable and odd seating arrangement. I decided to ask if we could sit outside, since there is a front porch with tables. The waitress said ok and off we went. The parking lot is odd as well as I watched my vehicle get pinned in several times due how small it is, mostly people waiting for to-go orders. 15 minutes later and seconds after deciding to leave, she came out, apologized for the wait and took our drink order. We both said coke and 10 minutes later out they came in a can. She then took our order. We had the Crying Thai-ger and the Pad Thai. I'm a pretty patient guy, but we ended up waiting 40 minutes for our food. We didn't receive both dishes at the same time. One came out and had to wait on the other with the waitress asking me at that time which type of rice I'd like since she didn't ask 40 minutes prior, so I knew I'd have to wait for a while longer. I tried the Pad Thai and the chicken looked like a microwaved Tyson strip that had a dry funky taste. None of the chicken was eaten any further. Once the Crying Thai-ger came out, I pretty much knew by the looks of the steak that it wouldn't be that good. Ordered medium, but was almost well done, thin and didn't smell that great. After trying it, I will say that you could get a better one from waffle house. During trying to decide if I would continue eating at all, the rice came out, so I decided to try mixing everything on my plate to make it taste better. I was starving and could pretty much tolerate eating anything, but surely a homeless shelter would have better food. At this point I was just ready to GTFO. After a while she brought the bill, I walked inside, paid and left vowing to never eat there again and will do my best in trying to prevent others from having an experience like we did. Don't stop,...
Read moreIf you're looking for genuine Asian cuisine flavors and dishes, this is the perfect spot. I'm always looking for non-American food places that are authentic and this is one of them.
This restaurant is quite small, a converted house it seems, with inviting decor and a comfy outdoor seating space. The staff are very friendly and welcoming. The food is loaded with unique flavor and balances solids with sauces well.
I had the cinnamon pork which turned out better than I had hoped for. The pork was extremely tender and flavorful. It came with a sauce that was just sweet enough and when dipping the pork in it, made a balanced blend of rich meat and sweet sauce that went perfect together. A side of simple, plain, perfectly cooked white rice serves as the critical palette cleanser and meal equalizer (in terms of flavor and texture).
The menu has plenty to choose from, I wouldn't be hesitant to order anything from here from now on considering how my meal went.
My only small gripes would be the pricing of the food is $2 or $3 more than I'd like to see (but what isn't nowadays?) and I'd like a little more attentiveness from the staff during my meal. I still highly recommend Pad Thai Asheville and these small inconveniences are well worth the prices for the...
