2020: Our Family goes there for breakfast and dinner to my surprise all meat is fresh hamburger / chicken / everything else they have angus beef and the Bomb Burger was awesome.
2021: Went here for dinner, Burger was horrible, tasted like frozen Walmart burger. Ended up ordering mozzarella sticks to fill me up which were ok, and it was 5 of us that ate so this is spread from all of us making it 3/5 instead of 2 or 1 /5
Hope it is better next year....
2023 Revision: We only went once for dinner, I personally ordered the chicken alfredo, the chicken was disgusting, I'm not sure if it was old, frozen, sat out, but it was not edible to say the least, on the other hand however, the noodles and sauce was excellent, they told me before I ordered that the sauce was homemade and I did not believe it, after eating it however I would believe it is homemade, this coming from someone who always eats homemade and rarely eats out. The rest of the family's meals were excellent. A certain improvement from 2021, however, not enough to raise from three stars from prior two visits, hopefully 2024 is better for them.
Summer 2025 Revision: Went to Sonnys for breakfast, food was pretty good, I'm not much of a breakfast person, but I enjoyed the omelet with toast and hashbrown, the sweet tea was also good. We stopped back in for dinner, the food was pretty good. All in all, a star gained for the overall experience.
I will however note, they are a "known" breakfast spot, and that has always been their "thing" I would say they are the best in the town of Hatteras, though not the best...
Read moreFound Sonny's by a suggestion of a Hatteras local who recommended the restaurant. Sonny's was two minutes from our vacation home. I must say I would have never tried it had it not been recommended because the outside looks like it has seen better days. Much to my surprise we were greeted immediately and seated, a party of 6. Our waitress was very attentive. I learned later by the owner it was her first day! I ordered a dish with the absolute freshest shrimp, scallops and lump crabmeat broiled with cheese on it. Wish I could remember the name of it. I ordered a side of green beans and they looked like they were freshly picked and snapped. Delicious! My two granddaughters ordered Snow Crab legs. My eyes grew huge when I saw how big the legs were and they were still steaming when they were served! We had just ate a few days prior at Captain George's in Kill Devil Hills, which is known for its superb seafood buffet and Snow Crab legs. I have never seen Crab legs so big as the ones at Sonny's compared to Captain George's! My husband ordered a fried seafood dinner with shrimp, scallops, crab and clams. He said it was perfectly breaded and fried to perfection. Surprisingly, the owner stopped by our table twice and asked about our meals. I was happy to tell him how great the food was, all of it. In fact, we enjoyed the freshest seafood so much, we ate dinner there again the following evening! Definitely worth every penny spent. BTW, they get their seafood off the boats that come into the...
Read moreThe only reason this place doesn't get 1 star is because the hostess was polite and the salad I ordered had fresh ingredients.
I eat a plant-based diet and was excited that the menu on their website had a 'pasta primavera' as one of the options. However, when we arrived at the restaurant, the printed menu did not include pasta primavera. In fact, the only item that I could order was a side salad 🙄 I asked if they could still make the pasta primavera (it's just a few different kinds of veggies mixed into marinara sauce) and was told "no".
If that was their only fault, I would probably give 3 stars -- but our waitress was also rude and other than dropping my boyfriend's pasta dish in front of him and walking away without a word, she didn't come back to our table at all -- even when we were both clearly done eating and waiting for the check. I had to ask another staff member TWICE if we could have the check.
What a waste of our time and money. I definitely recommend looking elsewhere -- perhaps somewhere that has a more creative menu & much friendlier wait staff.
Oh, and they are not on the waterfront, despite their name. This place is just one disappointment...
