This is regarding the restaurant at 8970 University Blvd in North Charleston, SC 29406. I have been a frequent customer since this Cook-Out opened. Today I went to get a small lunch of 3 chicken tenders and BBQ sauce. I placed my order, handed my card to the cashier and within a minute, my card and box of tenders was thrust out to me and the guy rapidly said, "have a great night" and closed the window. I shrugged and set the box on the seat beside me and put my card back in my wallet. I checked the box to make sure that I got the 3 pieces I had asked for since it seemed to get done pretty quick (kudos btw). I saw that the BBQ sauce wasn't in the box. I reached out and rapped on the window. Inside the crew was laughing about something and carrying on, so I knocked louder in case I wasn't heard. That is when the African American with red braids flung open the window and yelled "Oh No!! Not today! Don't be pounding on the window!" I told him that I didn't get any sauce. As he reached down, got the sauce and handed it to me, he went apoplectic, yelling that he "didn't care! there was no reason to be pounding on the window!" He caused such a scene that heads were popping into view to see who he was yelling at. I tried to explain that I didn't think he heard me, but he kept on going with his over-the-top indignation that I had almost shattered the glass rant, so I said "Whatever" and drove off. Fortunately, I had work waiting for me when I got back to work, so I had time to cool off. That said... I have NEVER been yelled at by ANYONE working at the register of ANY restaurant I have EVER visited before in my 59 yrs. This employee should be reprimanded at the least and fired at most. That is not the way to treat ANY...
Read moreHear me out. The kids love the almost infinite variety of shakes. But this place has maybe the most criminally underrated chicken sandwich I've ever heard of. I tell people at length about this thing and they stare at me, but then they want one. And if they have one, they want to talk about, too.
Grilled chicken with barbecue sauce that tastes of barbecued chicken, because it's actually that. The texture of the chicken is unadulterated. Juicy. Perfect. Little char on there you can't get any other way; little flavor of smoke. The pickle they use is the right kind of pickle. That's more important than it seems.
It's all so simple.
But somehow no one gets it this right. I imagine you could put coleslaw on it, were you so inclined. I'm not, but it sounds like a wise thing to do.
I'm not into fast food, but I'm actually fan of this. It's frankly my favorite chicken sandwich, and it's what comes to mind when I think of a chicken sandwich. I'm a little surprised I have it in me to be this enthusiastic about a simple chicken sandwich, to be honest.
They have these little hushpuppies you can dip into this smoky chili. Again, simple. It tastes of an actual cookout.
It's like something your uncle whips up after you've all gone fishing. We don't have anything remotely like it where I come from. And it's cheap. We have a Cookout every time we're getting ready to leave the area. They've never gotten the order wrong. Good kids work there, or something. Go see 'em....
Read moreI've always had a soft spot for cookout food, going back to my college days. But I've got to say, this recent experience takes the cake for being the absolute worst.
Picture this: late at night on Sunday, August 27th, 2023. I roll up to the drive-through window, and there's this young African American girl taking orders. Now, I'm all for late-night munchies, but her attitude was a complete downer. Obnoxious, rude, and just plain nasty – not only with me but with other folks in line too.
Now, let's talk about the food. I ordered a big double burger tray with all the works – you know, the whole shebang. What I ended up with was a burger that could only be described as basic. No toppings, just two patties between bread slices.
It's one thing if the service isn't great, but when the food itself doesn't live up to the name of the joint, that's a whole different story. It's a restaurant, after all.
I've made up my mind – I'm taking this up the ladder. Corporate office and the health department are going to hear about this. There were some things I saw that I just can't let slide. This service hiccup and the lackluster excuse for food? Not flying under my watch.
I'm all about giving credit where it's due, and I'll give criticism where it's deserved. This isn't something I plan on letting fade away quietly. Charleston deserves to know about this, and maybe, just maybe, it'll light a fire under them to step...
