Spices is a great little find. It's a bit of a fusion/pan Asian restaurant offering a few Chinese dishes, pho but mostly focused on Thai cuisine. The online menu features a lot of dishes but the restaurant menu had a few dishes crossed out so keep that in mind if you're browsing for dinner online. We wanted to start with the calamari but the friendly owner suggested we try her fried shrimp rolls and we were not disappointed. The rolls were like little cones stuffed to the bottom with whole shrimp and a fish paste. They were perfectly fried and came with a sweet and sour dipping sauce that was wonderfully balanced. I had shrimp pad see ew which was full of shrimp and vegetables with the right amount of sauce. I got it medium spicy but could've gone one level up since I love some heat. My friend had the yum yum spicy seafood salad which came with a nice mix of seafood including shrimp, squid and fish balls. The décor is modern, clean and welcoming and the staff is friendly and attentive. I'm planning on going back already because I can't stop thinking about those shrimp rolls.

Spices in at the same location where a failed Mexican place once resided, and still has a little of the latino decor left over, but the food is straight Thai with a little Chinese thrown in. It's family-run and they aim to please. I walked in and was immediately seated. The menu has lots of traditional Thai favorites, so I ordered chicken panang peanut curry - one of my favorites. After ordering, I learned the noodles at Spices are made by scratch, so next time, I'm going to order a noodle dish. My food came out in 5 minutes and was served with Thai hot relish pepper accompaniments that I don't recall seeing at other Thai places in KC. Nice clean bathrooms. Plenty of parking. Take-out ordering. Perfect portions. I was very pleased with the spicy yet balanced flavors. It was also fun sitting at the bar and watching the staff operate the modern, fancy restaurant POS. Cannot wait to go back.

We got takeout so I won’t comment on how it came cold and in one large lump of noodles- cause that’s likely not the fault of the restaurant. This feels like the farthest thing from authentic Thai food I’ve ever had. The noodles are not the usual pad Thai noodles. The sauce is red and sweet. I ordered it spicy and there’s zero spice. There is a lot. So if you don’t care about how it tastes and you just wanna get a lot of food for your money, this is a really large portion. However the taste is really lacking. It’s really 1-dimensional. No lime, no peanuts, the noodles are all wrong (they skinny like Pho Noodles). The flavor is flat, bland and watery tasting. My daughter got the lettuce wraps and the meat was mostly gristle and fat. The flavor of this was also flat and bland (which is ironic given the name of the restaurant) The spring rolls were really good though.

First off: don’t believe the hundreds of fake 5 star reviews. The owners of bad restaurants do this a lot. They make fake accounts and try to bury the bad reviews with 10-20 fake 5 star reviews. Always read the worst reviews first.

If you have had good Thai food then you will know that this is not good food here.

We went for the most basic things on the menu that we thought would be safe options at a place we had never been too. We ordered the crab rangoon and lettuce wraps as appetizers. They were actually good. The lettuce wrap filler tasted like it was made in a large batch in a crockpot or something and the crab rangoons were small and probably the frozen kind and not fresh. They both tasted good to be honest though. For our main courses that we wanted to share we ordered Pad Thai and General Tso’s with fried rice. The waitress asked how spicy we wanted it and my date said “Spicy” and I said “Yeah. Pretty spicy” but they both came out very sweet with no flavor. The General’s chicken consisted of bok choy, broccoli, carrots, and 6-8 unfried chunks of chicken breast and a very watery sweet sauce. That’s it! The Pad Thai tasted very sweet too. The beef didn’t taste right. It had “turned”. Maybe not all the way spoiled but way past being fresh. It wasn’t even good cuts of beef to start with either. The noodles did not have a good flavor at all and the beef didn’t taste right so we couldn’t even eat it. I was afraid we would get food poisoning to be honest. We were both mad at how much time and money and calories we had wasted there. They offered us boxes for our leftovers which we flatly turned down. I didn’t like it fresh so why would I want leftovers?? I would’ve rather had the “Chinese” food from HyVee and it’s not all that good. So imagine how bad this place is.

We just asked for the bill and the receipt said MILD instead of SPICY but I’m telling you there was ZERO spice or even any general flavor!! Bland and sweet. It had no flavor! Waitresses/cooks/owners (you’re probably all the same family anyway) listen up; don’t think that white people cant handle the spice or that we’ll eat whatever you make. If we say “Spicy yeah pretty spicy” then we want it to be spicy. It probably would’ve been just spicy with no flavor though. If you’re a Thai restaurant that can’t even make good Pad Thai you should just pack it in. Close up shop. Sell the restaurant equipment. Start a janitorial business or something. Just quit cooking bland food and expecting people to pay you for it. The cooking is very lazy. Lazy, lazy, lazy!!

It was a Saturday night at 7:00 and there was only one couple there when we got there. When we left around 7:45 there was a group of four and another couple. Now I know why the place was empty on a Saturday night at a time when everyone in the city is out to dinner. It’s because you don’t have repeat customers. I bet every customer in there was there for the first time. I know for a fact the couple behind me were first timers as well because they asked a lot of questions. I hate that some places are so lazy with their cooking because they think whatever lazy dish they serve up people will eat it. If you want to be a real success story you would try to actually make really good food so a lot of people will come back and be willing to wait an hour for a table at 7:00-8:00pm on a Saturday night, because you’re so busy, because the food is that good. Imagine that! That is a reality for some restaurants. Not yours though. Quit being lazy with your cooking!!! I’m so disgusted by...

We work up north & were excited to try this place. Went for lunch today. We were immediately seated & brought water. They have no lunch menu. It took awhile for someone to come by to take our order (7 minutes?). I asked if the crab dip that was on the menu had real crab meat. He said it was a combination. I ordered that & the lettuce wraps. My co-worker ordered the phad thai chicken. As the waiter was leaving I asked if we could have the crab dip served first before our entrees. He said "well we don't have the crab dip any more, we have crab rangoon." He was going to serve us crab rangoon & not crab dip? I said no thanks. Our orders were delivered one meal 3 minutes before the other. My co-worker said the chicken had no flavor. My lettuce wraps came out in a huge pile of very wet "leafy" lettuce, not crisp iceburg lettuce. It was very hard to wrap the chicken in without it falling out all over the plate. I had about 3 bites of it & realized the chicken was sitting in a bowl of grease. I didn't touch it again. Nobody asked how our meal was; nobody asked if we wanted to-go boxes; we had to ask for the check. After paying, I flagged down the nice lady who sat us & told her I didn't like my meal & why. You could obviously tell because my plate was still full. She said "ok I'll give you springrolls or crab rangoon to go." I said o.k. $10 lesson learned. They've only been open 12 weeks and I predict they...
