Introducing Cafe Kalawe (established 2018), a cute little spot for breakfast and lunch in Kaneohe. I recently discovered this gem of a breakfast spot while staying at a friend's place in Kaneohe. I had the build-your-own 3-egg omelette and it was fabulous. I also upgraded my starch to their famous home-made Kahuwai fried rice. So Ono!
I went at 0730 on a Wednesday morning. It was not crowded at all. I was met with a very polite hostess to seat me and every other waitress after that was also very polite and attentive. My coffee never got below 1/2 a cup before being asked if I wanted a top-up. I prefer a stronger coffee but it was tasty and typical diner style but always hot and fresh.
The place is well-adorned with many handcrafted signs, leis and seasonal appropriate. It was not overbearing and it had a very local vibe with the various signage, names of menu items using Hawaiian words and Hawaiian music playing at the appropriate level to notice but not distracting to a conversation.
Portions - typical large sizes and the full size loco moco was being shared by a couple next to me. They have smaller options for every level whether you just want a lite one-egg breakfast or the full monty!
I also didn't see a single Japanese tourist while I was here and unsure if they have discovered this place yet or not. I'm sure once they do they will make the trip and put Kaneohe on the map. If any Japanese are reading this I highly suggest two servings for three people and share. If it's just the two of you feel free to take away your leftovers since that is very common in Hawaii and the U.S.
But be sure to try the Kahuwai fried rice. It's Hawaiian style with a very local taste - not Chinese style. It's named after the Kahuwai area in Puna, where the Kalawe family comes from. You will probably get bits of Portuguese sausage with it and that another typical breakfast meat in Hawaii.
I highly suggest uploading pictures of the menu into Gemini AI to help you translate it from English to whatever your native language is. Be sure to ask it to also tell you the meaning of the various Hawaiian words being used.
Finally, regarding the parking - you must scan a QR code to register your vehicle for free parking. It only took less than a minute and only had to input your email address and license plate without any need to register the email.
This was a winner and great way to start my workday. Make it a point to have a meal here but they are closed on...
Read moreWhen we left the place we were staying in Hale’iwa and we had six hours before our flight back home. We headed north on Kamehameha Hwy and made a few stops after which we were in Kaneohe. It was lunch time and a search of eateries we decided on Cafe Kalawe. It located in strip mall and when we walked in it was very fresh looking and well maintained. They’re only open from 7am to 2 pm serving breakfast all day as well as lunch. I eyed spy the food as it was being brought out and it all looked well prepared. I had the Loco Moco but a half portion. I could have had fry rice, brown rice or white rice. I had white rice with an over easy egg. The hamburger had a nice char to it and tasted wonderful. The brown gravy was delicious. No lumps no flouring taste well season with no seasoning over powering. The egg was done perfectly and rice was good. It all came together perfect. My wife had the corn beef patty which is potato and corn beef formed into a patty. Two eggs over easy. And hash browns patty deep fried but not greasy at all and tasted nice and crunchy. She said it was well seasoned and tasted very good. The staff were very attentive and friendly. I differently come back when I...
Read moreGiven how good everyone said their food and experience was, I really wish I could give Café Kalawe a higher rating. I treated a friend to breakfast here one morning because we had time to kill. I liked the coffee because it wasn't painfully hot and didn't have the sour taste that seems to come with overdone coffee. My friend ordered a chocolate chip pancake and I ordered my usual for this kind of place, a waffle with strawberries and whipped cream. The pancake came with the chocolate chips on top (not bad, just unusual), and the waffle did not come with the strawberries but I was too afraid to ask for them, or for the syrup the server said she'd bring. I only stopped her for knives because it looked like she was already holding them. I might come back to try something different if someone else is paying. But remember, kids: Tip AT LEAST 20%, no matter the service. Your waitstaff is not getting enough to live off of from their wages alone. EDIT: I found out Cafe Kalawe changed management. My father knew the guy who opened the cafe, and it was family-owned. That isn't the...
