First timers and it did not disappoint. Have been an avid Instagram follower for awhile @straightouttahusk and always seemed to miss an event they popped up at and with the hours being limited, I never had an opportunity to make it to the store front. I just so happened to have a day off on Veterans day and they were open!
If you're familiar where all the local favorites are at Shiros, Kapiolani Coffee Shop, Jackie's. They are located right in that strip mall right inside Palama Market. Tons of parking so that won't be a problem! Made our way over a little after lunch and noticed there was a small line at the outside window which I expected. Menu was displayed outside and I already decided to get at least one of everything to sample and support a veteran owned business on Veterans Day! Thank you for your service! Husband (veteran) and wife owned business. They were even giving out some free sopa to Active Duty service members! Top notch!
We ordered the Chile relleno tamale Plate with rice and beans, elote corn, Birria taco and birria quesadilla. Total was a little over $45 with a tip. Totally worth it. They also had flan, horchata as well as burrito as options on the menu with other filling options. We were able to snag a table inside which was nice and cool. They share the seating area with some other surrounding food restaurant's.
Order came out pretty quick with limited wait time and we spread it out for us to admire and devour. My daughter enjoyed every bite of that quesadilla even with the onions and cilantro and even said the salsa wasn't hot. It burned my mouth but I ain't complaining, that's exactly how I would have it. Everything was super ono and I'm looking forward to our next visit to taste some of their other items!
You really don't see too much of the owners taking time to ask how your food was and thanking you for your business but the husband made sure to do that. We'll definitely be back to support your...
Read moreFood: Birria Taco - they do not skimp on the cheese! The birria sauce for dipping was nice and hot and the meat was tender. One thing, I wish the tacos came with two tortillas instead of one. But then I might not have had room for the tamal!
Mole Taco - chicken was juicy, the mole sauce was thinner and lighter than I'm used to but it worked well in the taco
Chile Relleno Tamal - this is one of their specials, and I've never had anything like it. So good! The chile was well cooked and it came with a layer of crispy cheese on top.
Jamaica - best jamaica I've tried, it's light but not watery, and flavorful but not too tart.
Service: Friendly and welcoming! Very helpful when it comes to suggestions. I was looking forward to the ube horchata but she was honest and said it's not ready yet, and recommended the jamaica which was really good!
Ambiance: For dine-in, you're sitting in a tight food court area between the checkout and the entrance of Palama Market. Vons Chicken Wings is next door. It's not ideal but it's understandable since they're sharing the space with Palama Market.
Overall 9/10! I'm definitely coming back to try the ube horchata...
Read moreI went to Straight Outta Husk right before lunch and was greeted by the owner and her two adorable daughters. The service was great and quick, and the food was fresh and hot—highly recommend!
I decided to take my order to go, but I did notice a dine-in option inside Palama. The smell of the food was amazing and I couldn’t resist eating it in the car.
I ordered a birria taco, which was delicious! I wish I had ordered more than one! The consommé was incredible—I couldn’t get enough of it and even thought about drinking it after I finished my taco.
I also tried a chorizo and cheese tamal with rice and beans. It was just as good as the birria taco. The portion size was generous, and the price was reasonable. The tamal had a nice heat level—enough to make my mouth tingle but not so spicy that I had to stop eating.
To wash it all down, I ordered an ice-cold horchata, which was super refreshing and paired well with everything. I finished my meal with a slice of their flan, which was equally impressive—chefs kiss.
I will definitely be going back to order more...
