I hail from the Downers Grove/Naperville area so I have that to compare it to, but every restaurant is different as I'm aware there are many ways to prepare Desi cuisine and it depends on the region. I noticed a lot of reviewers only got the chicken tikka masala, but please for the love of all things good in this world, try something authentic on the menu. I ordered chicken vindaloo, aaloo paratha and a salty lassi. Chicken vindaloo was tasty and had big chunks of chicken in it, huge plus for me as I'm trying to up my protein intake following a recent sports injury. :) Aaloo paratha is a wheat flatbread stuffed with potato and spices, including fennel, and it was my first time trying a stuffed paratha that wasn't methi and it was good. I was pleasantly surprised that Khyber Pass offered a wide array of stuffed breads which I haven't seen at many Desi places in the burbs. Since the food is SPICY I recommend pairing it with a bread that has fennel in the ingredients since the fennel cools things down a bit. The portions are generous as other reviewers have mentioned, and I hope that doesn't change! The bread is big enough that you can roll it out and put your food on sections of it to eat Ethiopian-style if you want. The salty lassi had a good flavor but I personally prefer them to be thicker, this was more like ayran IMO. But so refreshing on a super hot day. They're not open for patio or indoor dining during COVID-19 but the lovely Austin Gardens is around the corner so you can take your food to eat there for a nice experience. Overall this is good food and I look forward to trying out a new dish and one of their hot drinks to warm up with when the cool...
Read moreI am staying nearby at The Carleton Hotel and really wanted Indian food for my birthday as a treat while visiting. I saw that Khyber Pass was the only restaurant in the Western Suburbs, so I figured I would give it a try. The mixed reviews gave me pause, but I am so glad I ordered!
I placed an order online for take-out, and it was ready shortly after I arrived. I ordered a good variety of food, as I have not enjoyed the cuisine in a while.
The garlic naan is fantastic. Very flavorful. Also love the saag paneer (spinach and cottages cheese with spices). I only ordered a half order, and you can see in my photo (dark green container) how large the portion size is! I also ordered samosas, keema samosas, and lamb vindaloo. I have never had lamb vindaloo, but this is delicious! Boneless lamb in a very flavorful spicy sauce. They also gave me a generous portion of perfectly-cooked rice, and I look forward to stirring half of it into my vindaloo and half into the paneer.
Maybe I'm just easy to please, or maybe folks in Oak Park are a bit snobby? I found the food to be delicious and a good value and am surprised by all the mixed reviews. If I lived locally I'd be...
Read moreI've been to this restaurant twice and I've had enough. The restaurant has a specific atmosphere. Employees are sitting at the bar and eating something. At the same time, they are watching something in their phones with the sound turned on at full power. Is this respect for visitors? I think not. The second time I went in and ordered a curry chicken, telling the waiter that I wanted the one they offered at lunch hours for $9. When they brought me the bill, it was for $23. When I asked why it was so expensive, they told me that they brought me a regular portion and it was bigger. The waiter didn't even ask what portion I was ordering and didn't understand what I meant when I pointed him in the direction where the advertising of dishes at lunch hours weighed. I must admit to you, I would never pay $23 for this dish. The chicken was dry and not tasty. They brought it to me in a cracked plate. I didn't even finish it. The portion of rice is very small. I don't recommend this place. There are a lot of good restaurants nearby where you can have a great time. I will never come back here again and I...
