Terrible bakery with terrible business practice.
I had been looking for a bakery for my sons birthday cake but unfortunately started the search later than I had planned. After several days of being told ânoâ I sat down and made a list of about 20 bakeries within a 30 mile radius of Morgantown WV (where the party was held) and Charleston WV (where we reside.) Mountain Flour bakery was only 55 minutes from Morgantown and it appeared they made very detailed and beautiful cakes so they were at the top of my list! I called and spoke with someone over the phone explaining all the details of what I wanted for my sons birthday cake (basically a swimming pool with dinosaurs in inflatable tubes swimming/playing at the pool). I included every detail I would have liked to have and the lady I spoke with asked me to hold so she could check their calendar and ask the head baker. I waited and she came back to the phone and told me they could do it and then asked me to send my inspiration pictures to the bakeries email which I immediately did.
I heard back from the owner Pamela Warnick the next day (Sunday) 24 hours after I had sent the initial email with pictures and typed details of what I wanted. It was a short blunt email and stated they could not do something that elaborate in such short time but they would gladly still make my sons cake. I saw this email late on sunday and responded asking what they could do because if they were unable to do anything pool or dinosaur themed I could just have Walmart or Giant Eagle make a sheet cake and save the 55 minute drive to and from their bakery the day of the party. I did not hear from Pamela all day Monday (understandable as it was Memorial Day) but also did not hear from her at all Tuesday so Tuesday early afternoon I wrote another email asking her to please let me know what she could do or not do for my sons cake in 4 days. At this point I was assuming I wouldnât hear back at all and had contacted a local supermarket to make my sons cake.
I heard back from her the next morning at 0900 and she stated she could do all the aspects of the cake as requested but could not make the dinosaurs. She stated they had plastic dinosaurs they could place on the cake and I replied stating that was fine. However, not wanting to waste anymore time and knowing that it was taking days to get her to email me back, I asked for a phone call sometime that day or early the next day. I heard nothing from her whatsoever, so Thursday afternoon I called the bakery and spoke to her directly.
She was rude over the phone and every time I asked about a specific detail for the cake (could the plastic dinosaurs be placed in the pool, would the pool have realistic looking clearing blue water, would she be able to do fondant tiling for the sides of the pool, how about flotation devices, chairs, umbrellas or a ladder?) she huffed and puffed and had reasons or excuses as to why she couldnât complete x, y or z. Her biggest reasoning was she only had 48 hours at this point. My issue was that all of the things I was asking for, 48 hours prior to needing the cake, were communicated to her via the first email 7 days prior to the party and her associate had told me it was no problem. She stated she couldnât be expected to respond to every email same day and that her associate was new. While I understood these facts, I also knew it was taking her far longer than a single day to respond to emails and in my opinion the unknowns surrounding a cake due in one week should have warranted a call by the bakery 48 hours before I was to pick up the cake but she didnât even bother to call me, I had to call her.
Finally I just stated to Pamela that if she could do anything Dino and pool themed we would take it as our other options could not be themed and she rudely stated âIâll do what I canâ and hung up.
We never heard from her again and decided to forgo the drive 55 minutes out of the way for a âIâll do what I canâ cake. She wasted our time as we could have contacted other bakeries had we known our cake was...
Read moreI can't say enough good things about Pamela and the incredible cakes she creates! As the owners of Red Barn Inn and Savage Sisters Events, we recommend her to every single one of our brides, and without fail, they are always blown away by her talent, professionalism, and the stunning cakes she creates.
Pamela has also been the baker for all of our family events. Her cakes are always delicious, beautiful, and tailored perfectly to the occasion. So, when it came time for my own wedding, there was no questionâPamela was the one we trusted to make both of our wedding cakes, and she did not disappoint.
Pamela has this incredible ability to take any vision and bring it to life, no matter how detailed or unique. Her attention to detail, creativity, and skill as a baker and artist make her the best!
Thank you, Pamela, for everything you do for us and for our clients. We love working with you and canât wait for many more events and cakes to come!...
Read moreThe cake I ordered for my parents 50th anniversary was perfect. The order was taken over the phone, so I didn't get to describe very well what I wanted. I pulled photos from their previous cakes and asked for a combination of multiple cakes. It came out perfect! Exactly what I wanted! Also, I was worried bc I didn't get to try the cake flavors before I ordered. I had two completely different cakes in each tier and they were amazing, just wish I'd ordered the Key Lime on the bigger tier...or the whole cake! My only complaint was with the pickup of the cake. The staff working in the bakery didn't seem to know where my cake was. It was sitting up on top of the bakery display window. The lady pointed to it and said "It's right there" and walked away. No-one attempted to help us get it down. Customer service was definitely...
