As impressed as I was with the sister restaurant, Maria's Pizzeria, I found myself wanting more from this establishment. The service was particularly frustrating, with a roughly ten-minute wait for a simple latte that ended up costing extra due to a milk substitution, which is especially irksome as I have no control over my lactose intolerance. While this is fairly standard practice nowadays, up charging for milk substitution remains irritating nonetheless. The coffee itself was rather generic, lacking any standout qualities, and to add to the disappointment, my girlfriend couldn't even order her desired Chai tea as it was out of stock.
Moving on to the donuts, I decided to sample a Boston cream and a regular glaze to gauge the overall quality. While the dough of the Boston cream donut was perfectly prepared, striking the right balance of firmness and sponginess, I found the cream filling to be excessively sweet, and there was an overwhelming amount of it compared to the dough. Personally, I would have preferred a slightly more restrained application of cream. The glazed donut, although not bad, failed to impress either, with a generic taste and no noteworthy characteristics, except for the well-cooked dough. Disappointingly, my girlfriend's strawberry shortcake suffered from poor-quality strawberries, which she described as soggy and old tasting, despite the rest of the components being satisfactory.
Overall, this visit left a lot to be desired, and I couldn't help but feel let down by the underwhelming experiences with both the beverages and...
Read moreThis business will not do well because whoever they are hiring does NOT know how to make an expresso drink! I will not return due to this reason alone. I went in for a few donuts and ordered a blended mocha with hazelnut. The young man who waited on me did not know what he was doing. He and another young man were waiting on customers. Neither one was friendly or helpful to customers, and looked bored, which is bad for any business. It took the young man a long time to make my drink (I could see him making it) and when it was done, he had forgot to put in the chocolate, and the drink tasted horrible, and the coffee was bitter. He made it again for me, which was another long wait, and when I went out to the car, I tasted it and realized he forgot to put in the coffee. I paid around $7 for this and had to throw it out!!! I did not want to go back in and wait again. I am a former owner of an expresso business from Seattle, and the fastest way to ruin a coffee business is to hire workers who have no training on making coffee/espresso drinks! People who buy coffee will probably buy donuts, too, and the people who buy donuts will most likely buy coffee, too. But if donuts are bad tasting or coffee is bad tasting, the owners lose a huge customer base. They lost me. If I owned that place, I would make sure I had great coffee/espresso, because once a person finds a good espresso drink, they will return again and again. PS. A clue for the owner: only grind the espresso beans as you go, per customer, because when ground espresso sits beyond 3 hours it...
Read moreAttention anyone who’s new to Ocean Isle! If you’re going to Maria’s next door, order donuts at the same time otherwise you’ll pay almost double in person.
I visited here with my family for the first time last week. We decided to order dinner from Maria’s (the Italian place next door) and grab donuts next door for a treat the rest of our stay. I ordered dinner on Maria’s website and noticed there was an option to order donuts as well for $17.99/dozen but there was no option to see what the flavors were. Since I’m not familiar with their menu or what they would actually have in the store, I decided to order them in person when I went to pick up dinner. When I got to the register, I was charged $29.99 for a dozen donuts and let me tell you they were not worth the price. About half of the donuts I got were stale like they had been sitting on the shelf for a few days. I didn’t feel this was fair, especially bc there was no info on the website about available flavors and there was no notice about how they would be more expensive in the store. I called the store and the associate let me know that the manager had left for the day but they would call me back the next day. I never heard from them and paid almost double for stale donuts. I love to support small business but not when they take advantage...
