Very pleasant little spot. The structure itself appears to formerly serve as a public restroom which is a neat repurposing and likely lends itself to plentiful faucet accessibility which I’d imagine is advantageous in a small restaurant setting. The downsides of former public restroom usage however come in the form of limited area for seating and the line to order, but I felt as though the quaint nature of the outdoor area contributed to the overall aesthetic and experience at the buccaneer cafe.
The pleasantly expansive menu covers what I coin as “The Big 3” of beachside cafe dining which we all know to be smoothies, caffeinated beverages, and breakfast entrees ranging from bagels to breakfast burritos to açaí bowls. As someone who routinely cannot decide between what sauces and/or ingredients to construct any dish with and as a result just ends up putting everything on everything, the kitchen sink breakfast burrito immediately caught my eye. I’m sure glad it did because in a world where breakfast burritos have become either dull or gimmicky, this kitchen sink breakfast burrito was a shining beacon of hope that a creative elevation from your standard breakfast burrito ingredients can stop short of contrivance while delivering something fresh to a breakfast burrito cynic. Not only was the bacon crispy, providing a welcome textural contrast, but it was diced into bits like a true burrito analyst knows it must be, lest an entire strip be extricated from the depths of your burrito for such a small misstep as incomplete mastication. Along with that perfectly crisped collection of bacon bits, came an agreeable menagerie of diced ham & breakfast sausage. I particularly appreciated the sizing of the ham cubes, which done incorrectly, can easily be lost in the potpourri of a kitchen sink breakfast item, or overwhelm its surrounding cast members. Last but not least, the egg was cooked to a level of soft but firmness that i believe could bridge the chasm that exists between those who prefer eggs runny and those who prefer eggs hard.
My Mexican mocha I must admit was more of a 4 star beverage, as opposed to the 5 star review being provided to this establishment as a whole because it was not the most flavorful in any specific direction, but the textural elements of the chocolate pieces really shouldered the load for the entire beverage, and I would be remiss to not give commendation to the chocolate masher who sized the pieces in such a way that only 1 clogged my straw over the course of the entire beverage.
Would certainly recommend...
Read moreIf I could give zero stars I would, which is so unfortunate because we used to love this place and legit drove all the way from Carlsbad today to eat here!
Rounded up my family of 5 to enjoy a beach front breakfast and headed over! Got it line while waiting for a table and was able to pop my stuff on one then hop back to the cashier to order. Was rudely cutoff by the woman behind me, and the scolded by the young blonde girl working there. You never know what someone’s morning/day consisted of already and I was ready to get some food ordered for my little family.
She basically made me feel like I was wrong/rude/mean/a piece of garbage for correcting her that I was still in line. I have never before been reprimanded at a restaurant or made to feel so lowly!
I told her what happened and yet she continued to tell me that I should apologize. Funny, I was smiley and happy to be there and left with a crying 3 year old and upset.
They changed the layout out front so seating is now more limited. It’s going to be a long time before we come back, if ever!
Just because you are the only place around, doesn’t mean people won’t choose to go other places. So off we go somewhere else to have a...
Read moreWe love this local spot. It's just 3 blocks from our home and we've been walking down to the beach to get our Bucc Cafe fix for all the years we've lived here. Why? It has all the great things we expect in a cafe.... fresh and delicious food with accommodations for special needs, super friendly staff, always greeting us with smiles, consistent hours - we can count on them being open during the hours posted (every day!) they support other local food purveyors, they feature local musicians when they have special events, they are completely community-minded. And last, but certainly not least, we can use our new REPEGS app there to not only save money every time, but also contribute, automatically to local causes we care about, without it costing us more. Highly...
