I wish I could give this place a million stars. Five is certainly not enough. I have been going to Sylas & Maddy's for years and I'm confident that it's the best spot for ice cream in the metro. Review updated May 2024: Best spot for ice cream in the REGION, at least! I've since moved to St. Louis, credited with the creation of waffle cone. While St. Louis boasts a great many frozen custard options and a handful of yummy ice cream places, nothing holds a candle to Sylas & Maddy's. Let's discuss:
The space itself is wonderful. It recently doubled in size when they took over the storefront next door and it probably tripled the seating, which would have been my only qualm before. The decor is super sweet with ice cream motifs, including the ever important reminder that, without ice cream, there would be darkness and chaos.
The people are outstanding. Every employee is helpful, friendly, and patient. They dole out samples willingly and enthusiastically.
Prices are reasonable. Portions are generous. Waffle cones are manna from God (with a surprise at the bottom!).
Now the ice cream. Ohhh the ice cream. There are not enough synonyms of splendid, tremendous, or extraordinary to describe this ice cream. It is creamier than creamy. Tastier than tasty. Smoother than smooth. With cute names to boot. Best deal: split single in a waffle cone (two flavors for the price of one).
Personal favorites include Peanut Butter Freak, Chocolate Fudge Brownie, Da Bomb, Birthday Bash, and Rock Choc Jayhawk. New faves include Cookie Monster, Yellow Brickle Road, and Mahomes Magic.
The line goes out the door frequently in the summer - as it should - but the wait is never long, and is always worth it!
I recently returned to KC for the first time in 3 years. I was at Sylas & Maddy's within 12 hours of arrival. It's that good. Thank you to this sweet ice cream shop for always bringing tremendous joy to me and my children....

Ā Ā Ā Read moreWe went to Sylas and Maddy's during Lawrence's Pride celebration. My mother and I each got a waffle cone with two scoops. We got four chocolate flavors but I don't remember the exact names. All of the ice cream was creamy and smooth. The cones got pleasantly soft as we ate.
I don't recommend the five-flavor sampler unless you really pick flavors that compliment each other. I got the sampler the last time that I visited Sylas and Maddy's and the flavors all sort of melted together into a generic sweetness. The ice cream was still good but I couldn't tell any of the flavors apart.
Tyler and the rest of the crew over Pride weekend were amazing! They had to deal with an enormous rush all day long on Saturday and they crushed it. Tyler was the one who served us and he was very accommodating as we didn't know exactly what we wanted. He also made sure that our cones were properly filled and that we had enough napkins. He also gave us bowls when we asked. I really appreciate that Sylas and Maddy's still offers quality ice cream treats with efficient, friendly employees. I've been visiting Sylas and Maddy's for over 25 years and the experience is...
