This was my first time in a Black Bear Diner and unless some divine will gets me back in there it's the last. For starters we waited 7 minutes to be greeted, not sat, that took an extra 2 minutes. I have never walked into a place that took almost 10 minutes to seat me. Took awhile to get coffee and it was mediocre. The server sounded a bit rushed and not very welcoming. We had already invested a fair bit of time into this experience and I wanted a waffle so we ordered.
We now get some entertainment in the form of the service window for food. I noticed the ticket system was the same as my old work place and it already had 2 red orders up. Next to the monitor I saw a plate with onion rings on it and decided to clock how long it took them to get that food out while an old man, bless his heart, seemingly did nothing. A coworker even approached him several times and didn't seem to help. Meanwhile the screen is now full of tickets and the service window is completely packed. 27 minutes. Food that was ready to be served took a 27 minute nap under a heat lamp. At this point my partner had put her coat on. We have both worked in service and this is a sign to our waiter that we are gonna leave. We are approaching 40 minutes at this point.
To his credit the waiter acknowledged the signal and assured us our food was on the way and offered us a refill of our coffee, we both declined. We both understood that our food was probably under that heat lamp without saying anything to each other. When the waffles arrived they were a spongey mess. My bacon was black in areas and the eggs looked alright but messing up scrambled eggs is pretty hard.
Cooking eggs is ~2 minutes? I will give bacon 10 minutes with the waffle assuming it's all made to order and not batch cooked to fulfill orders. At 50 minutes we left even though the food had arrived the quality was not something I would pay for. I left the waiter $5 for the 2 coffees and service.
I absolutely will not be back and will not recommend this establishment to others. Being a manager I know where the choke point in service was and it was that lone man at the service window. Your wait staff could have contributed to get food out. Hire somebody else to control that service window. The man looked confused and in pain.
I can make $500 in an hour and you wasted an...
Read moreWhile the food and servers have never been anything short of excellent, I must express my extreme disappointment with the way management has handled a technical glitch. I ordered online through Black Bear Diner's website and was charged for my order, however the order never actually went through. So, I went into the restaurant hoping I could get a better understanding of the situation. Understandably, they asked me to wait until the transaction was no longer pending before requesting a refund. For this reason, I proceeded to pay them again for the same meal, so that I could bring food home to my family who were waiting for their meal.
I waited for the charge to post, then called back a few days later for further direction. Upon calling, I spoke with Steve - the General Manager of this location. Upon my reaching back out, he stated that since he had no record of the transaction (No way, really? That's the whole reason we're here, buddy!) I would need to dispute with my credit card company, and that he would approve for them to do a quick, easy chargeback based on the facts. His reasoning for this was that it would be 'quicker' than a refund. I'm not sure why I believed that, but I do generally try to give people the benefit of the doubt. Unfortunately, when my credit card company reached out to Black Bear Diner, Steve changed his tune and is not approving the chargeback.
Now, because I took Steve at his word on the phone and did not get this agreement in writing, my credit card company is making me jump through hoops in an effort to get them to side with me on the dispute. So, for now, I'm paying for food I never received. Unfortunately after this stunt, they have lost a long-term, local customer over $40 that they weren't entitled to in the first place.
UPDATE: Sent an email to Black Bear within an hour of their response. We're up to a week laternow, still nothing. I'm not particularly hopeful at this point. Unfortunately we already decided to patronize another establishment this weekend, despite cravings for Black...
Read moreHave been to this place before and never had an issue. But service started okay but got worse as time went on. My girlfriend and I went there. We got the scramble and the chicken fried steak for breakfast. We came on a Sunday but midday and wasn’t super busy maybe 10 tables max but only 6 when leaving at 1 pm. The food came out and my food hadn’t even been remotely seasoned. Then my girlfriend asked if she could not have one thing in the scramble and then it was drowned in the pickled jalapeños she didn’t want. My food came out and chicken fired steak was poorly seasoned while the gravy tasted like water. My hash browns were soggy, undercooked, and not seasoned. We typically never complain about service or food and I never waste food I eat everything. The server came by and asked how we were when we got the food. I said the hash browns weren’t good. She seemed like she didn’t know what to do with that information. She said she would have a manager come talk to us but instead have us a receipt with a 50% discount. Then avoided us the rest of our time there. We weren’t aggressive or mean about it. But wanted something different or a compromise. We ate 3 eggs, coffee, and took the pancakes to go. The service got worse when we had an issue with our order. Manager just wanted to hide. The lady in the front was great when we walked in but was aggressive at checkout. I wish we had a better experience. We love this place during the fall because we go there watch football on our phone and eat a fat breakfast. Sundays here use to be the best. Now we will need to find another diner on Sunday. Side note we notice the family next to use only eat a 3rd of there food. Very disappointing experience. Would get better service at a Denny’s at 1 am than here. Management needs to change and cooks. But lack of service, poor management, and hate to say it but bad food. Wish we ended on a better note but didn’t. Will miss what...
