Last night my bestie and I came in for dinner. We had a wonderful experience, the restaurant was shockingly empty for most of our experience. Their menu is largely Thai Based but they do offer some Vietnamese specialties as well such as Pho, Banh Mi and Vermicelli Bowls as well.
The food was magnificent and we definitely were warmed up by it on the chilly night last night. We had the Khao Soi, Grilled Beef Salad with some Rice Ball sausages. The Khao Soi ( Coconut Chicken Noodle Soup) I got at a spice level of 5. It has tender pieces of Chicken, wonderfully sour mustard greens to break up the richness of the crave worthy coconut broth and fresh red onions and crispy noodles on top and at the bottom of all this delicious is a wonderful nest of tender rice noodles. The Grilled Beef Salad is a wonderful delight of sour, sweet and spicy while also being incredibly savoury with the tender pieces of Grilled Beef. We got this a spice level of 5 as well and thoroughly enjoyed it. The spice played nice with the toothsome rice powder sprinkled across the dish, and mingled well with the fresh cilantro, mint and also the red and green onion and seasoned with a spicy lime dressing. All of these things may sound out of place but upon tasting you’ll find your tongue is being played a perfect symphony of flavours that just continue to build the more you eat it.
The rice ball sausages were delicious but always perplex me in a way that always makes me want them again and again. Tender sausage combined with noodles and wrapped in a chewy rice paper with a slightly peppery bite to them from the seasonings, but in no way spicy. Try them and you’ll find yourself wondering where they all went.
Overall we can’t wait to come back for another delightful experience, but if it’s cold or you need your Thai fix. Salween is my favourite place to start at and I can’t wait to explore and experience the rest...
Read moreI tried Salween Thai for the first time earlier this year - I got takeout for lunch. I chose Salween because I was excited to see they had pineapple fried rice on their menu - it lived up to my expectations, LOVED it!! I have been back several times since then for both lunch and dinner. I have never eaten at the restaurant (only takeout). Even with getting the food to go, it is still always fresh and hot once I'm ready to eat. Delicious! I chose Chicken with the pineapple fried rice, but you can also choose beef, pork, shrimp or tofu.
I also really enjoyed the samosas - and also liked the fried wontons (the fried wontons came with a translucent yellow sauce - I did not try the sauce but I was expecting the same red sweet & sour type sauce that comes with the samosas).
We recently tried the mango fried rice with chicken as well. This was also great! I could not see the mangos, but the taste was definitely there. (I felt there could have been a little more chicken - I could only find a couple very small pieces, while the pineapple fried rice had lots!)
As for spice level, if you don't like spicy go with a zero! I like mild to medium spice and a 3 had me sweating a tiny bit. Spice level 4 was good, but would not be my go to everytime. But good news if you like things spicy, they go up to spice level 10 (which I can't imagine).
So glad I tried Salween!! I will definitely continue...
Read moreVery expensive for what you get - very small portions (super skimpy on the rice for curry dishes, even if the heart is cute) and spiced poorly. Even if we order a spice level of 2 out of 10 for pad thai, it's unbearably spicy. This has happened multiple times in our experience. My brother in law ordered a 5 out of 10 and it was not spicy at all - less spicy than spicel level 2 of 10 entrees. They also never asked what protein to include in my Massamun Curry and I got literally 3 pieces of brocoli and a few carrots and potatoes for $13-14. To top it off, I tried the mango sticky rice and poured the coconut milk on the rice and the smell was horrible - like wet cat food. Tasted it and it was BAD. I've never had this experience before. We threw away our second order of it. We spent $200+ for our family's meal and only 2 of the 5 entrees were spiced correctly and the dessert seemed spoiled. I would've sent it back if we had dined in, but we did takeout and do not live close by.
Overall, this was a disaster and very, very disappointing. Total waste of money - I feel bamboozled. Wouldn't recommend any more. Am considering contacting the owners at this point. This was their worst showing in our years...
