I cannot express adequately in words how amazing this donut shop has been over the years. Has it been over 10 years? I remember when they were in a different location and moved to the current location. Every aspect of this shop is amazing. First, the "old-style small shop" feel, for me at least, is an instant positive ambiance. It isn't a perfect, sterile building, like so many places. It smells like childhood memories of old fashioned donuts with a side of coffee in the air, and the imperfections of the building (such as the crack in the window) make this place feel approachable. Then you are greeted by the owners and the workers, diligently making these donuts day in and day out. I think the owner himself gets in at 3 or 4am every single day?? It's like visiting a favorite aunt and uncle and family every time I go there, and am always welcomed warmly and leave happier than when I walked in (and not just because I have donuts in hand!). Then the donuts themselves - Somehow, the donut dough is ALWAYS perfect. Pillowy soft, NEVER overcooked or undercooked. The toppings are ALWAYS high quality, and there is such a magical variety. Also, I have never had better fritters in my life, anywhere. Not to mention, they have ALL kinds of fritters to choose from, not just your typical Apple. They have raspberry, and chocolate, and BANANA, and more! And they make a VERY decent cup of coffee, both drip and espresso if you desire. But really what introduced me to this place so many years ago, was the Donut Holes! Honest to god, hands down, these little delights are always my go-to when I have a craving, especially since a dozen costs basically pennies on the dollar. Amazing! If you haven't tried this place and you are hungry for a donut, do try it out. You won't be...
Read moreDonut Day has the best donuts in Portland (yup, you read that right). This place is a hidden gem.
I lived in the Pearl during my first year in Portland, and I visited every well-known donut shop in the city. The two that stood out the most were, as you can probably guess, Voodoo and Blue Star. I love Voodoo’s ‘plushness’, creativity, and simplicity. And I love Blue Star’s punchy, surprising flavors backed by their precisely executed baking process. I would frequently visit both shops on my walk back from work.
Then COVID hit, my office shut down, and I decided to move to the burbs for a better life for the pup. One of the things I thought I’d miss most - the donuts of Portland.
I tried a number of local shops in the Hillsboro area. There are a lot of amazing local donut shops out there. I love and appreciate all of them, but they didn’t replace Voodoo or Blue Star for me.
And then I found Donut Day. The first time I tasted one of their donuts, I was blown away. Their maple bar was heavier and moister than Voodoos. The frosting seemed fresher and yet had a thin, firm shell that provides a satisfying crunch when taking a bit. The yeast donuts are, in my opinion, perfectly balanced. The outside is fresh and crispy, and the inside is fluffy yet moist and substantial. I’ve tried at least 10 different flavors so far, and every single one has been fantastic.
So if you’re in the Beaverton or Hillsboro area and craving tasty donuts, there’s no need to head downtown. Just visit Donut Day.
And fair warning: if you live nearby, you may form a donut addiction. Consume...
Read moreI really loved this donut shop, been coming for years. Best one outside of portland..... BUT, quality and service have really gone downhill. I've tried coming in at a variety of times, right at opening, 30 min later, hour, 1.5 hours later. For the past 6 months, they almost never have any fancy donuts in their display case. I thought it was because they've sold out of them by the time I get there, but nope, they just aren't making them anymore. Twice I've come in and nothing out in the display, but when I asked, the owner said he had cinnamon twist, roll, and apple fritters in the back. What is the point in keeping them in the back? The variety of the fritters is why I come, especially the pineapple one. Since they dont seem to make them anymore or make enough, I'll probably stop coming since my partner likes Boston creams and I can get those anywhere. Plus, the owner is very short and rude and was too busy on his Bluetooth on a phone call to fully listen to my order. He kept getting short with me when I wanted to order more than just one donut. If he had focused on me fully, he would have known I...
