My fiancé & i recently had the pleasure of dining at American Japa Sushi, and I must say it was an outstanding experience from start to finish. This gem of a restaurant truly exceeded all my expectations, leaving me with a craving for more.

First and foremost, the food was absolutely delicious. Disappointing Experience at American Japa Sushi - Discrimination and Poor Service

I rarely leave negative reviews, but our recent visit to American Japa Sushi was a disaster. We chose this restaurant to celebrate my daughter's birthday, based on recommendations. Unfortunately, our experience was marred by subpar service, limited food options, and blatant discrimination.

Issues:

Misleading "All-You-Can-Eat" concept: Limited variety and no options to choose from. Slow service: Our server forgot our requests multiple times, despite the restaurant being empty. Water was complimentary but hard to get: We had to ask repeatedly for water. Poor food quality: Thinly sliced salmon and excessive rice. No birthday acknowledgment: Despite informing them of my daughter's birthday. Automatic gratuity: 25% added to our bill without notice or menu disclosure. Discrimination: Server claimed gratuity was for the "mess" caused by our children, implying extra charges due to family size.

Resolution:

After questioning the gratuity, the server removed it, and I voluntarily tipped 15% because I always tip since I was a server in the past. However, the manager's lack of explanation and apology raised concerns about discriminatory practices. I asked if this was a policy, normal practice and Viviane the manager said it’s not. They don’t usually add gratuity to large parties and I asked so what’s the reason and the server said because of the mess, I asked if there’s a fee for a mess and the manager said that’s also not a policy. We made the mistake of trying to celebrate a bday here. Never coming back!

Conclusion:

Our experience was ruined by poor service, subpar food, and discriminatory treatment. I suspect we were targeted due to our cultural background. He thought I was a Brazilian Tourist. Little did he know I was born and raised in the US but speak Portuguese. Avoid this restaurant unless you want to risk similar treatment.
