We had high expectations for BSP given that so many of our friends had raved about how good the place was. Sadly, it was a huge let down.
We went after going to a co-worker's retirement party just a block over. We could have easily ordered food at the restaurant where the party was held, but we decided to walk over to BSP because of all the good things we heard. We arrived a little before 8 PM on a Thursday evening. The place wasn't busy, but it wasn't dead either. There were patrons sitting at about 7 tables and there was no line at the counter to order. We ordered a medium pepperoni to share, paid, and went with our number sign to a table. I don't know how long it took for us to get our food. It didn't seem long at all, but when the pizza was brought to our table, instantly we noticed how blackened the crust was, especially on one side as if the back of the oven is considerably warmer than the front (makes sense if the door is opened frequently). My girlfriend and I each took a piece. The topping looked great and the pizza was piping hot. When it cooled to the point we could finally take a bite, all I could taste was char. I looked at the bottom of my slice and it was very dark, nearly black in spots. Unfortunately, because i had to be at work at a certain time, we couldn't wait for them to make a new pizza to replace this overcooked one so we didn't bother bringing it up. Instead, we each ate 2 slices.
I am giving 2 stars because the staff we dealt with was nice. The person that rang up our order was pleasant and when we asked for a box to take the remainder home, one was immediately brought to us. I don't why we brought the rest of it home because it is the half that is considerably more blackened than the side we ate, so we likely won't eat it. I'm sure that the toppings and cheese are high quality, they should be given that we paid just shy of $20 for a medium one-topping pizza, but I couldn't really get over the taste of the burnt crust.
Will we go back? Well, gven the experience, I doubt we will return. It isn't far from where we live, but it isn't an area we overly frequent. We just have other options much closer that we've had much better meals. It just sucks that we had such high hopes for finally trying the pizza there after so many friends have said how great it was there and we were met with a blackened,...
Read moreInfo: (1) “Sicilian” choice of pizza means thick crust (and doesn’t reference pizza with sauce drizzled on top of the other toppings, like some pizza places in other states do) (2) [pre-2023] They seem to be more likely to overcook the pizzas than to undercook them (3) They used to have really flavorful pizza (pre-2023), but our visits in 2023 have left us with pizza that has very mild flavor. They did improve their dough and overall tendency to burn/undercook the pizza. But I don’t think this was worth losing all the flavor
Pros (1) Tasty pizza & toppings (2) The bacon topping is essentially the size of (extra) large bacon bit chunks of bacon, that end up getting fairly crispy. None of that soggy sad bacon on some pizzas. And it beats the pizzas that just use bacon bits (3) Fairly good cost-to-quantity ratio. At first $30 for a (Sicilian) pizza seems really high, but we only managed to eat half of the pizza total (my normal is half a medium pizza), so we ended up at like $7.50 a meal per person
Cons: (1) In general, the staff seemed more overworked/tired and less happy than most other places we’ve been (2) On one of our trips we ordered a Sicilian pizza, and the employee taking our order repeated back our order as a Sicilian. Found out upon receiving our pizza that they had keyed it in as a large normal pizza instead ($1 difference, so the price didn’t give it away). Was a bit of a downer, but it still tasted good. Definitely recommend checking your receipt immediately after ordering to make sure they keyed it in correctly (3) On one visit, we received a not cooked Sicilian pizza, so we had to wait another 25ish minutes for a second to be cooked. Not a big deal, but one employee stating that the dough is just like that (undercooked) sometimes didn’t help
Overall, used to be great (though hit-or-miss). But now, the lack of flavor doesn’t make the...
Read moreHorrible horrible customer service!!! My sister and I decided to go on a recent Saturday night. The closing time was 10 PM and we walked in at 9 PM. One hour before close and ALL of the chairs were put up on tables, so it was obvious there would be no place to sit. Fortunately it was nice outside so we decided to stay and eat outside. When we went to order, we were told the only thing we could order were slices of pizza, not a whole pizza. OK, I can live with that. So we ordered and went outside. When our salads came, they were the wrong salads, but that was OK too. I tend to be pretty flexible about these things. Our pizza slices came and they were pretty good too. However, at 9:45 I needed more napkins and a to go box. I went to the front door and it was locked! 15 minutes before closing time and I could not get in the front. The employees all saw me at the door and knew I was an existing customer. So I went to the side door. When I got there, a gal was just finishing locking the door and walked away LAUGHING! Thought it was pretty funny to beat me to the door. So I stood there and knocked on the door until a worker finally came to ask what I needed. The attitude there is that the customers are a bother and they would rather go home than do their jobs. If there had been a sign on the door that they were closing early, or if they had at least said they were trying to get out early, I could have been OK with that. But they were very rude to have locked the door in my face and not want to attend to existing customers. My family went to the same place a couple of months prior and they got our order all wrong. Needless to say, I won't...
