We were reading an article in KansasCity magazine about the 40 best restaurants in Kansas City, and saw one that isn't too far from home, and only had one "$", so we decided to give it a shot. It was fantastic! We have eaten at several of the mediterranean restaurants around town, and this one is a definite stand-out that we will return to. The pita was hot, buttery, flaky, and grilled to perfection. We ordered the tapa platter so that we could sample their falafal, and two kinds of baba-ganoush. Lots of places can make good hummus, but we have found it more difficult to find someone that does baba-ganoush well. Hummus and pita has got that covered! They have two different kinds: one that I would call a traditional baba-ganoush, and another that has some walnuts and a pomegranate sauce mixed in (the menu calls this one the "real" baba-ganoush). I liked them both, but preferred my traditional, while my wife preferred the "real" offering. We also ordered a shawarma wrap. Is was jam-packed with chicken, and I really enjoyed having it in a wrap instead of the heavier pita, which is the norm at other restaurants. And, last but not least, we ordered the avocado shake, because I have never seen that on a menu before. The KC magazine article mentioned that is a specialty of Jordan, where the owner is from. It was creamy, smooth, and offered a cool avocado flavor topped with cashews and honey to give it some complexity. I enjoyed it quite a bit, but I do think you need to be a fan of avocado to like it. The owner came out to check on us, and when he found out it was our first time, he brought out a sample of his hummus so that we could try it as well. It was quite tasty! Hummus and Pita offered everything that we are looking for in a restaurant: Great food, an inviting atmosphere, friendly service, and not too...

Read moreHummus and Pita is an exquisite phenomenal Mediterranean restaurant. Situated in a classic building downtown Overland Park Kansas, you can get some of the best Middle Eastern food available in the Midwest.
The owner took our order (visiting with a friend who has visited many times) and coached us through the choices. Every encounter with the staff was met with a smile and an effort to make our visit perfect.
We ordered way too much food as I wanted to sample many items, and we got everything we paid for and more.
I could write for many paragraphs about the food, but to sum it up: Lamb kabobs were the best I have ever had. Unbelievably tender and tasty. The gyro was exceptional and huge. Very well balanced. Hummus was super creamy with just a hint of Tahini. A winner. The falafel were perfectly fried with a creamy, puffy interior. Perfect. While I told the owner I was not generally a Baba Ganoush fan, he included a sample of what he serves as "Real Baba Ganoush." It was very different from what I have experienced and was most delicious. I am now a fan.
There were more tasty items we experienced, but please stop by and sample for yourself.
