Located in a newly built section of retail shops on Maryland Parkway, near UNLV, it has the benefit of being next door to Crumbl Cookies, and 1-week old Brew Tea Bar for Boba tea after your meal.
The sushi is super fresh, and for the first time in a long while, the rice is perfectly seasoned and cooked - it doesn't fall apart when you bite, isn't cold and hard, and is proportioned to the fish. The pleasant surprise was their greens salad which wasn't the typical iceberg lettuce with shredded carrots, but instead had Brussels sprouts and baby greens.
They have a crudo option, which is a sushi version of a gravlax platter, like their 6 piece Salmon Crudo - Soy Pickled Onion, Cucumber Hearts Spicy Garlic Ponzu. We had their Salmon Lovers roll - salmon, cucumber, spicy garlic ponzu, with micro cilantro toppings. Fresh, not at all overly fishy, and filling. We also ordered the Tiger Roll - Shrimp tempura, cucumber, spicy tuna, sweet soy, spicy aioli which had crunchy tempura in a not too spicy aioli. I special requested a tamago hand roll and a cucumber/avocado roll which were just perfect - the omelette wasn't cold and pre-made, and the avocado was melt-in-your-mouth .
We were mostly done with our meal, before I realized I hadn't snapped photos of any of the food. That has never happened before, so it's a testament to how good it really was. We were seated under their umbrella covered table in front of the restaurant, so between the conversation and car watching, time really flew by.
Kudos to our server, Nick, who was very attentive, making sure our passion fruit and green teas were always filled and telling us about the neighborhood, Chef Richardson and the garage parking spaces reserved for Sushi Joe's and retail neighbors. We took his advice and bought Crumbl cookies and BrewTea Bar boba to cap the meal. I highly recommend...
Read moreRead reviews about the freshness of the fish and quality of the ingredients so I got the Yellowtail crudo, gyoza, Kamikaze and Philly rolls. The friendly and timely service were much appreciated, but I'm sad to say, my gastronomic experience was almost unremarkable.
The portions were very small. Not a problem. I expected the yellowtail crudo to be refreshing and with minimal ingredients, it was just that. I even smirked when I saw the grape tomatoe halves.
The gyoza, if I can call them that, had a good taste. The filling was great and the exterior was unusually drizzled with flavor and topped nicely with aromatics. However, gyoza are supposed to be pan fried, but the dumplings were not browned and were near-doughy as though steamed.
My rolls were generic and petite. I was reminded of the day old California rolls you find displayed at a market next to the stuffed rice balls, and bento boxes. I dislike Cali rolls so when I saw black and white sesame seeds on all of my rolls and the packets of wasabi, ginger, and soy sauce, my expectations lowered. The smell, textures, and taste also seemed consistent with that store bought quality to me.
Had my meal been store bought, I'd have only wished for Sriracha and more eel sauce. In my opinion, the overall experience didn't meet my expectations for the proposed ingredients and price. Regardless, with a location across the street from the UNLV campus, their accessibilty and products may meet the standards of their target consumer; the young...
Read moreWe went here on a whim due to another place being extremely busy and honestly not worth our hassle. The waiter and one of the chefs were very knowledgeable of all menu items and ingredients, how they are sourced the in house made items for freshness and we were give detailed descriptions of each menu item. They were very passionate of the craft of their restaurants food and made marvelous recommendations. We had the brisket gyoza which was to die for. The brisket was cooked beautifully and they are made fresh in house. we also got their signature roll, lobster roll, a truffle roll and tiger. All wonderful truffle flavor wasn’t overbearing. Also must try the salt and pepper squid, I’ve never actually enjoyed squid until now. I also practically hate soy sauce but they make theirs in house and I actually ate it! Bottom line service and knowledge of staff was a pleasant experience and a unique one( I go out to sushi ALL the time and I’ve never had such an interactive dining experience) this is our new favorite place will...
