I was very excited to try this restaurant after seeing it on YouTube (Food Insider and The Try Guys). Drove 40 minutes just to visit this place. Ordered a beef cheeseburger, chocolate milkshake, fries, and apple pie for dessert. The milkshake was solid. But the burger and pie was just ok. It was not bad by any means but it wasn't as good as I expected because Food Insider hyped this place up as the best cheeseburger in LA. When it came time for the checkout I was told that this is a cash only restaurant which annoyed me right off the bat but I didn't say anything because there are other places that have this policy as well. I ordered 4 slices of pie to go because I wanted to try out different flavors. Got the pies and came home. When I opened the bag, I realized I only got 3 slices of pie. Confused, I called the restaurant to see whats going on and I wondered if I accidentally only put in an order for 3 slices instead of 4. Turns out I did correctly order 4 slices but they made a mistake and only put in 3 slices but I was still charged for 4 slices of pie. I requested they give me a refund for the one slice of pie I didn't get. I was told that I would need to come back to the restaurant IN PERSON to get the refund in cash or if I come back as a customer I can get a free slice of pie. I explained that I lived quite far away and I also may be moving soon (which is true, I am tentatively waiting on a job offer from a different state) so my visit would probably be the first and last time at the restaurant. So I asked if they could send me the money electronically with Venmo or something and they still said no because they have a cash only policy. Needless to say, I was beyond annoyed. I just gave up and hung up the phone. The pie is only $6 per slice so it doesn't break my bank or anything. But its the whole principle that is so upsetting for me. I feel like I have been robbed of my money which is essentially what happened. You expect me to drive all the way over to you guys again which is almost a 1.5 hour drive round trip just to get a $6 refund? It'll cost more for the gas to drive there. Very disappointed.

For years I passed by this place not knowing what it was. The signage outside reads "Pie N' Burger" on an exterior wall outside their parking but compared to businesses and traffic surrounding the intersection of Lake & California, it's very easy to miss. However, after finally deciding to try it out, I have to say that it's one of the best small local diners that I've ever been to. While their menu is small, they offer enough to make your visit worth it, even to try out something you didn't necessarily go for. As the name implies, they have a variety of Pie options available (they also serve a 'pie of the day') ranging from apple, banana cream, cherry, chocolate, and others. They serve a good ol' fashion cheese burger and although the portion may be small, it sure packs a lot of flavor in every bite. Quiche is something that they also serve which is something that seems out of place in a diner like this but just like their pies, they are homemade and have a different flavor depending on the day (the day I went it was a mushroom and cheddar quiche). Lastly, their milkshakes are VERY good and although they only have a one size, any of the extra shake left over from when they are making it for you is packed in a small little plastic cup so that you could take that with you. Before I forget, the staff that was here was incredibly helpful and patient with deciding what to get. It's easy to forget interactions when you're ordering food but the server here knew how to make us feel welcome and helped in deciding and explaining what was on the menu. Pros: The food is delicious and the portions are reasonable. ATM machine inside. Service is friendly and inviting. Cons: The pricing might be a little too high for some people. CASH ONLY (for now).

Opened in 1963 Pie ‘n Burger is a classic American diner that serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They have a giant counter that you can sit at or they also have tables in the back. Many orders are taken to go, but I think dining in really gives it the full experience. The Positives: the staff is very friendly and helpful and reminded me of the sort of diners you would see on TV from many years back. The food taste is also really good, my burger was delicious and so was the side of chili cheese fries. The portion sizes are also very healthy. In terms of quantity you get a lot of food. It’s not the sort of place that you will leave hungry. For our order we chose the homemade Macaroni Salad, which was very good, the BLT, and the Big Ben Burger, which is a double cheeseburger stuffed with toppings. We also ordered the Chili Cheese Fries and a slice of Cherry Pie. The Negatives: it is cash only. They do have an ATM on the inside but given that many people don’t carry as much cash nowadays that’s something to prepare for. Also, some of the prices are a bit expensive. My burger was $23 which is pretty expensive compared to a lot of other places around Los Angeles, I mean a double double from In N Out is less than $5. Also, there’s no dedicated parking so it will be street parking only. Overall a fun experience with really good food but due to the prices I am not sure that I will be back. It’s the sort of place that has many regulars so they are doing something right, although being that I don’t live in Pasadena and am in West LA, I am not sure I would make the hike up for another dinner.

I live on the East Coast now, but this place opened in 1963, the year I started eighth grade at the private school just down the boulevard and my mom occasionally took us there for pie after school. So when I was in Pasadena a couple months ago, I saw the 60th anniversary 1963–2023 signs and decided to go in for old times sake. Was glad I did, brought back memories. Other than obviously higher prices, really hadn’t changed too much in my memory. Basically, a long lunch counter with just a few tables squeezed in. Waitresses using paper checks, checking the sales tax chart on the wall, adding it up manually. At first glance, plumbing fixtures in the men’s room, looked almost as old as the restaurant! Really just a burger place with good pies for desserts. My service was OK and relatively polite, although when I saw on my iPhone they had guest wifi (there wasn’t any in 1963!) and asked a second waitress walking by for the password, she acted bothered and was almost surly. My cooked-to-order burger was quite excellent, just like the ones I remember in school, but the price, my goodness! $13.50 for a single cheeseburger and a glass of water, not including tax and tip? I didn’t even get french fries! I wasn’t all that hungry, so I didn’t have any pie, but had they had any fresh fruit pie that day I probably would’ve splurged and had some. All in all, I was glad I stopped, but next time I am out there in Pasadena, I will probably go to In-N-Out Burger on Foothill Boulevard and save considerable dough :-)
