Tender Greens — Restaurant in Pasadena

I wanted to like this place. I had visited their Glendale location once a year ago before they closed down. And to my delight, the food there was good, tasty and affordable. But, as I said, they closed that location down. The only thing I didn’t like about the Glendale location is that they accept credit card payments only. Personally, I think it’s wrong for any restaurants in the United States not to accept cash from cash carrying people. But this is another topic for discussion at another time.

Now as to the Pasadena location. I’ve driven by this tender greens numerous times on Colorado Boulevard without ever having noticed them, until one day I noticed them.

So I made a mental note to come back and have a late lunch, which happened a few days ago

To my surprise and disappointment, the chicken cob salad was subpar, served with black spots on the avocado, chicken chunks that I couldn’t fork and some other unrecognizable pieces that were just as hard to chew.

This got me thinking as to why some of the chicken chunks were rock hard and others were tender. Then it dawned on me that was after 3 o’clock and maybe I was being served leftovers essentially. ( note the heat lamps over the meat section) Nothing was cooked fresh as they appear to cook some things in advance, particularly when they’re busy during pre-lunch hour, etc..

Oh, and another thing, I ordered the vegetable platter which had five different vegetables and appeared to be grilled cooked. If you check out the pictures, I think you would agree they over grill cooked the vegetables! Lot of charcoal edges everywhere and I didn’t finish the meal.

And although I’m giving him only a one star review at this time. To be fair, I will come back on another day much earlier to see if I get a much better result, or if it’s a repeat. Stay tuned for my future update review coming soon….

I'm staying in Pasadena and I really wanted something healthy, but I also I'm over how expensive room service is and didn't feel like a sit-down restaurant. So I ordered an advance I walked down there, I'm a little disappointed that I got there 5 minutes before I was supposed to pick up and it was already waiting. Because by the time I got home it had clearly been sitting for longer than the 5 minute walk home. Which is the only reason why it didn't get five stars, things had started to get cold. And I don't have a microwave in my room.

I got the mashed potatoes which were lovely and delicious and I just wish that they were warmer. The steak mid rare was cooked better than I've had it cooked midwear at some fine dining establishments which is awesome because I only paid $14 for this mid rare. And the seasonal vegetables which I'm really happy I got I got brussel sprouts and carrots and sweet potatoes and it was a really nice mix again a little cold. On Fathers Day my kids wanted to do something special for dad and decided to order various meals for our family from Tender Greens. We had the steak, mash potatoes and salad meals as well as the steak salad, some chicken meals and various other dishes. I have to say for such a special day and spending so much money I will not order from this place again. The steak was so tough one could hardly cut it, let alone chew it. It felt like it was cheap meat they had purchased knowing that many orders were going to be placed on this day. The chicken was OK but the steak was awful. It has been tough for everyone during this Covid 19 season for so many and things has been tough for families and spending money like this on a special day when one wants to support local businesses but it is annoying when the amount of money one invests and the quality of the meal is disappointing.
